Ninian‘s Mindful Moments – Dragon Boat Festival | Wrapped in Leaves, a Past We Can’t Go Back To
Friend, happy Dragon Boat Festival.
When I was little, the festival meant the smell of reed leaves in the kitchen. I’d wait nearby, hoping for a salted egg yolk to fall out as adults wrapped zongzi.
They told me the story of Qu Yuan, the poet who drowned himself, and how people threw rice into the river to protect his body. I didn’t really get it — I just loved the taste.
Later, I moved away. The festival became a phone call: “Have you eaten zongzi?” “Yes,” I’d say — though mine was from the convenience store, nothing like home.
This year, I tried making zongzi myself. I used too much rice, and it all leaked out. I stared at that pot of rice porridge for a long while — realizing how much love went into the ones I used to take for granted.
If someone comes to mind today, give them a gentle call. Ask softly: “Have you had your zongzi?”
Ninian and IX Distribution wish you someone to miss and someone who misses you.
Ride the scent of reed leaves, and blossom into new longing.
