WeChat's new privacy controls: what does it mean for users and advertisers?

In early March 2020, Chinese super-app WeChat announced it was tightening privacy controls on third-party apps to restrict the collection of sensitive personal information to a smaller group of developers.

As the new privacy controls will only allow information to be gathered on a need-to-know basis for mini-programs, it will certainly limit the efforts of mobile advertisers to collect and match consumer data from WeChat mini-program usage.

As part of the new privacy controls, WeChat has also banned external links from Tencent’s own services including social media app Friends, Tencent News and WeChat Reading, which “entice users to download applications” while accessing user contacts.

JD.com’s 1-year-old health unicorn to get $830M from Hillhouse

When JD.com, Alibaba’s archrival, realized the health market spans well beyond retail, it spun out its healthcare unit into a subsidiary last May for a potential initial public offering. That startup, JD Health, gained a staggering valuation of $7 billion fresh off its $1 billion Series A round in November.

In less than a year, another massive check is on its way as JD Health announced it has entered into a definitive agreement with private equity firm Hillhouse Capital, which plans to shell out over $830 million for the infant company’s Series B financing.

JD Health is now a multifunctional health platform, providing everything from 30-minute pharmacy delivery, telemedicine service that saw surging usage during the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer-related health services such as genetic testing through to solutions to digitize hospital systems. The business “achieved profitability” last year, its chief executive Xin Lijun claimed.

The health unit is yet another effort from JD.com, the closest Amazon equivalent in China for its control over the supply chain, to branch out of online retail. JD.com also oversees an independent fintech subsidiary and a separate logistics business, both of which have plans to go public.

What's up in China!

JD.com ramps up China logistics expansion with US$432 million deal to acquire Kuayue Express.

Backed by Sequoia Capital, Kuayue-Express Group Co was established in Shenzhen in 2007 and now has more than 50,000 employees.

JD.com’s latest deal shows the aggressive push being made by Chinese e-commerce players to broaden their logistics and transport infrastructure to meet fast-growing consumer demand, which has picked up pace this year amid the country’s coronavirus pandemic lockdowns and travel restrictions.

What's up in China!

Pinduoduo readies a wholesale service, dialing up Alibaba rivalry.
Chinese e-commerce platform Pinduoduo is testing a new wholesaling feature named Duoduo Pifa, which connects merchant buyers with manufacturers and wholesalers.

Expanding into enterprise services highlights Pinduoduo’s ambition to attract and retain business customers, an increasingly important component for its ecosystem.

The launch of Duoduo Pifa further fans its rivalry with Alibaba, which has been operating its own B2B wholesale site, 1688.com, since 1999.

What's up in China!

Popular social media App Wechat saw an increase in monthly active users (MAU) for Wechat mini programs reaching to 829 million in June, an increase of 11.6% year on year (YoY) compared to 743 million a year ago.

Mini programs are an important channel for main apps, especially those offering high-frequency services like food delivery.

They also offer a lightweight, convenient way to try out a limited version of a service and are a crucial channel for apps to acquire new users who want to use the full range of services.

Lifestyle services was the most popular category among Wechat mini program users in June, followed by video, shopping, tools, and transportation.

First introduced by Wechat in 2017, mini programs have become ubiquitous on many of China’s biggest apps, including Tencent’s QQ, Baidu, Meituan, Alibaba’s Alipay, and Taobao, as well as Bytedance’s Jinri Toutiao and Douyin.

What's up in China!

Chinese regulators said that they will impose administrative penalties on Luckin Coffee as well as its related firms that helped with fabricating accounts and false advertising, less than a month after the scandal-hit company was delisted from Nasdaq due to accounting fraud.

Founded in October 2017, Luckin Coffee has expanded to 1300 stores in a year, surpassing the number of Costa Coffee stores to become the second-biggest coffee brand in China. Luckin Coffee also signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Tencent.

Much of Luckin's expansion was fueled by an aggressive marketing strategy which saw the company spend three times as much as it earned to feed its growth.

However, all came to a stop when an investigation found out that Luckin and its related entities inflated income and expenditure and engaged in false advertising, all of which violate China's accounting law and anti-fair competition law as well as China's securities law.

What's up in China!

Tencent has made a preliminary offer of USD 2.1 Billion to make Sogou private, China’s second-largest online search service. Analyst has theorized that this USD 2.1 billion buyout of online search service Sogou could supercharge WeChat.

The offer seems to indicate aggressive plans to further integrate Sogou’s search engine into Tencent’s multipurpose messaging and social media platform WeChat, which has more than 1.2 billion monthly active users and has long been using Sogou as its default search service.

Tencent’s full control of Sogou would make integration easier, allowing the internet giant to enjoy all the profits that such combination of resources might generate.

What's up in China!

Trump has set September 15 as the deadline for TikTok to find a US buyer. Failing to do so, would lead him to shut down the app in the country.

With the recent order to ban Tiktok in the US, Trump also issued a similar order for WeChat, a group chat app owned by Tencent, a Chinese based company.

The order states that it will ban financial transactions with Tencent. The order states "any transaction that is related to WeChat by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with Tencent Holdings Ltd. (a.k.a. Téngxùn Kònggǔ Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī), Shenzhen, China, or any subsidiary of that entity, as identified by the Secretary of Commerce (Secretary) under section 1(c) of this order."

The President's threat to shut down the platform also comes a month after a stunt organized mainly through TikTok may have led to a sparsely-attended Trump campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the days leading up to the June 20 rally, a coordinated effort was underway on TikTok encouraging people to register online for the free event and not show up.
