WeChat REACHING FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP

Online giant Tencent´s latest mobile communication tool WeChat has reached 200 million users in China in record time. Now the company is aiming for global leadership with the unique application.

Already available in 16 languages, WeChat has become the leading mobile social media platform in a wide range of markets, incl. India, where WeChat became the no. 1 app in a mere 3 months! The picture is from WeChat´s India launch.

The combination of 3 innovative functions make WeChat unique:
- SHAKE (adding friends who are also shaking phones nearby);
- LOOK AROUND (to literally fetch “new friends” reaching out to strangers in your neighborhood); and
- DRIFT a message bottle (you can throw and randomly pick up a message bottle from the virtual ocean).

While conventional chatting is normally between you and your acquaintances or followers, the three functions provide users with chances to connect with people they don’t know by a simple shake or click.

Moreover, WeChat integrates with both Facebook and Sina Weibo, making it not only the first Chinese application to aim for a global position instead of just a Chinese position, but also the first Chinese app. to really being open to full-scale integration.

In China there´s a market for everything, including fake followers to Weibo accounts. Nicknamed Zombies by industry experts, they can be bought for as little as RMB2 (USD ,4) for 1000 followers, and RMB 15 for 10,000 followers.

So when cooperating with bloggers, online media or even companies make sure to test the quality of their followers before simply buying in to their reach!

DOUBAN - China´s overlooked social network

Most people following social media in China knows about Weibo. The Sina-giant which in record time has bypassed everyone else to become the dominant market player, with a mix of facilities from Facebook and Weibo (i.e. Facebook on speed...). In the midst of the fight between Weibo, Renren and Tencent one player has managed to grow steadily to become a strong - but overlooked - player: DOUBAN.

Targeting a younger and more individualistic segment, Douban has a total following of nearly 80 million users. 2/3 are women, age group 25-34, most define themselves as interested in design and more high end movies, books and events. In short: An really attractive segment for many niche companies.

At our meeting w Baidu (China´s largest search engine, app. 70% market share) representatives today they told us, that the most expensive search in Chinese is for exclusive crabs during crab season, w prices running as high as 60-70 rmb/click!
