Dear followers!

Today, I won't post any new photos of newly 3D-printed objects. This post won't be an advertisement post. Moreover, it will be more like an anti-advertisement post. 🙂

3D printing is a great solution when you need to:
1. Create unique or customized products.
2. Rapidly prototype a product.
3. Manufacture a small batch or smoothly transition from prototyping to mass production.
3D4U Serbia can assist you in these cases.

But based on 3D4U Serbia's and my own experience in the additive manufacturing industry, I'd like to highlight instances where 3D printing services may not be the most feasible or cost-effective option.

Case 1. 3D printing vs. purchase in the local store
If you need typical items that can be purchased at the nearest store, 3D printing is definitely not the right choice. If a polymer part is manufactured in China in millions of units per month using traditional techniques like plastic casting or vacuum forming, it will be cheaper than a 3D-printed part.

Case 2. 3D printing vs. online store
If you can order some part online and you have time to wait for a delivery in many cases purchasing online could be cheaper option than 3D printing.

Case 3. Not a polimer part needed
In some cases, a client may need a metal part rather than a polymer one. 3D4U Serbia does not currently have metal 3D printers.

Bonus case. Dental 3D printing
3D4U Serbia can print parts with SLA technology in rare cases, which results in a smoother surface. However, we do not currently operate in the dental 3D printing market segment. I am aware that there are several professional dental technicians in Tbilisi who work in the dental 3D printing industry.

Let's walk through the steps needed to make an order, using one old case as an example. It involved printing a fixture for foreign sportsman participating in a bicycle competition.

STEP 1. The 3D model
Find the desired 3D model. File format should be STL, OBJ, STEP, or 3MF. The 3D model should be printable with FFF/FDM or SLA technology using polymeric materials. I posted the list of the most popular platforms for model downloading on the 3D4U Serbia page on June 7, 2026. Alternatively, you can order our modeling service.

= So first of all, the sportsman found the proper 3D model of the Garmin Fenix 3 HR bike mount.

STEP 2. The environmental impact
Please clarify if the printed detail should have UV and water resistance, as well as resistance to cold and heat (please specify the temperature range). Additionally, please clarify if the detail needs to withstand physical load.

= The customer clarified that the detail should reliably function in temperatures ranging from 0 to +45 degrees Celsius and be resistant to UV radiation and water. It should not be subjected to physical impact.

STEP 3. Appearance and post-processing
Indicate the precise post-processing techniques intended for this detail, including but not limited to sanding, polishing, and painting.
Additionally, specify if you have any particular requirements for the surface smoothness and the detail color.

= The client told us that no post-processing was required and no specific smoothness was needed. Dark green color prefered.

STEP 4. Number of details and the deadline
Indicate the number of details needed and the desired date for their delivery.

= In this case, the client needed one fixture by the next morning.

After all those steps, we can calculate the price. And then you are ready to make a decision about the order.

One of the reasons I love 3D printing is that it can easily resolve some of your issues. I will demonstrate a detail creation process on the following example.

Step 1: Defining the Problem
I had no convenient point to hang my jacket during a street workout.

Step 2: Solution Idea
To create a small hook that could be easily and reliably fixed to the equipment. It should be water and UV resistant and should be able to work in a wide temperature range. So, I choose polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) material for this case.

Step 3: Modeling
I measured the equipment's parameters and rapidly created a very simple 3D model of the hook.

Step 4: Slicing
I converted the 3D model into a set of commands for my printer using special slicing software. The term "slice" is used because 3D details are printed layer-by-layer. So, to create a set of manufacturing commands, you need to slice the entire 3D model first.

Step 5: Printing
I waited a short time for the printing process to be finished because the dimensions of the detail are small.

Step 6: Post-Processing
Not needed in this case.

And finally, I can hang my jacket easily and have my workout.

Our team members are huge fans of board games, from classic titles like chess and backgammon to more niche options like "Terraforming Mars" and "Catan." But what if you can't find the exact, rare board game you're craving? Additive manufacturing could be the perfect solution.

The "Tumbleweed" game is a great way to enhance your spatial thinking skills. Each of two players starts with five cubes standing on one edge of the board, each with a different colored cap. The objective is to roll the cubes, taking turns, until all five cubes are on the opposite edge of the board with their caps facing up. The first player to achieve this wins. Overtaking another cube, whether your own or an opponent's, is not allowed. Once a cube is standing on the opposite side with its cap up, it can no longer be moved.
