Here’s how YouTube actually works: when you post a video, it shows it first to your existing audience. People who already know you. They click because they recognize you, not because your title and thumbnail are amazing. That’s why your CTR looks high right out of the gate.

Then YouTube starts testing your video on a new audience, people who’ve never seen your content before. If they click, your CTR holds up and you get pushed further. If they don’t, YouTube quietly stops showing your video. That’s the moment your growth stalls, even though your early numbers looked perfect.

Fun fact: there are way more successful videos with a low CTR than a high one.

So stop obsessing over click-through rate. It’s not the metric that predicts success. What actually matters:

- Impressions
- Views
- Retention graphs

Those tell you if new people are finding your video and if they’re actually sticking around once they click.

CTR only tells you if people who already trust you clicked. It says nothing about whether new audiences will.

There’s a strategy quietly making YouTubers a fortune: the highlight strategy.

Ali Abdaal does it. Hormozi does it. Every smart podcaster does it.

Here’s the idea: if you’re speaking at events, podcasts, gigs, anywhere you’re on camera, you’re sitting on content you’re not using.

Say you give a talk and someone asks, “How do I start a business in 48 hours?” You answer it live. Later, you pull that exact segment (4 to 20 minutes) and post it as its own YouTube video.

That’s it. Question = open loop. Answer = closed loop. One clip, one complete video, packaged a thousand different ways:

“How to start a business in 48 hours.”
“Can you start a business in 48 hours?”
“If I had to start a business in 48 hours, here’s what I’d do.”

Now stack a bunch of these on a separate channel (call it “More [You]” or “[You] Highlights”) and post one per day.

Hormozi did exactly this. His highlights channel has 100K subscribers. His main channel has 4.5 million. The highlights channel makes MORE money.

This works even better for podcasts. Look at Modern Wisdom: 6 of his top 10 most viewed videos aren’t full episodes. They’re clips.

This is the exact strategy I use to blow up podcasting clients. My rule: stop making more content. Start using the content you already have.

Pick a strong moment. Extract it. Repackage it. Repeat.

Squeeze more out of what you’ve already got.

Huge news. YouTube titles have personalities now.

Everyone's staring at CTR like it's the only number that matters.

The metric that actually separates real creators from people who just film videos? Viewer satisfaction. If they leave happy, they come back. That's the whole game.

But here's the one almost nobody tracks: session time.

It's not how long they watch YOUR video. It's how long they stay on YouTube after clicking it. Link your videos in a playlist, send them from one to the next, and YouTube starts rewarding you for keeping people on the platform.

CTR gets you the click. Satisfaction and session time build the channel.
