This is not posing. The vibe you’re getting from this picture is real.

Over the past 7 weeks, I had the pleasure of supporting Bevolkingsonderzoek Caribisch Nederland through a coaching and training trajectory.

What I experienced was a team with strong synergy. Even though most employees are not directly responsible for communication, everyone made an effort to actively participate in every session.

Each colleague shared their knowledge and experiences with a large dose of enthusiasm and laughter. The result: highly interactive sessions that generated multiple ideas for the communication strategy and implementation.

“𝐈𝐤 𝐳𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐢𝐤 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐳𝐨.”
“𝐈𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐠, 𝐢𝐤 𝐤𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐫 𝐳𝐨 𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐠.”

Jaren geleden zei iemand tegen mij: 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐧.

Starting MPOWR’s 9th anniversary with a training at Bevolkingsonderzoek Caribisch Nederland!

It truly is a joy to share my knowledge of marketing communications and ideas with others and to witness those AHA moments when new opportunities become clear.

I would like to thank all clients in Curaçao, Bonaire, and the Netherlands whom I have supported with strategy, implementation, and education. Your trust means the world to me.

This week I travelled to Bonaire to guide my intern and to visit several projects of the nature organizations Wereld Natuur Fonds - WWF collaborates with. It was a full schedule of meetings, but it was also refreshing to step away from my laptop and engage in hands on fieldwork.

Some highlights of the week:

✴️ Joining Gwen Versteegh to document dolphin sightings for Caribbean Cetacean Society. The collected data helps us better understand the behavior of these marine mammals and strengthens conservation strategies to protect them.

✴️ Assisting Mangrove Maniacs Bonaire with channel maintenance. Keeping these waterways open is essential to ensure healthy water flow between the front and back of the mangrove forests, which directly impacts the entire ecosystem.

✴️ Snorkeling to visit the coral nurseries of Reef Renewal Foundation Bonaire. With 20 restoration sites and more than 74,574 corals outplanted so far, their work is making a tangible difference for Bonaire’s reefs.

Now it is time to fly back to Curaçao and transform these field experiences into meaningful stories for the WWF-NL's blogs and social media channels.

Esta dushi Karnaval!! 🎭✨

I truly enjoyed the Carnaval festivities but besides the music and vibes, I loved observing the different marketing strategies in action during the parade.

Carnaval is not just culture. It is also a massive live marketing playground.

Here are a few strategies I noticed:

✴️ Mascots for brand visibility
For example the Lavish mascots walking along the parade. Mascots create instant brand recognition. I hope they also combined this with free sampling because visibility plus tasting is what truly triggers purchase behavior.

✴️ QR codes on banners
Smart move. Scanning to enter win campaigns turns offline visibility into online engagement and gives brands valuable data for future retargeting.

✴️ Flyers and vouchers
Pizza Hut promoted deals valid until March. That is not just awareness, that is traffic generation with a clear call to action and deadline to boost short term sales.

✴️ Promo teams and sampling
Alocolado Glacial had its Refresh Teams cooling down the crowd under the scorching sun. This is experiential marketing at its best. You associate the product with relief, emotion, and experience.

✴️ Visibility everywhere
Banners, digital screens, flags on trucks, carnival stands. Repetition builds memory. And memory builds preference.

𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨.

On Instagram, I contacted someone who presented himself as a hobby photographer. I clearly explained what I was looking for and asked where the photos were taken. The images I received were beautiful.

When I reviewed the collection more carefully, I noticed that one photo contained a watermark from Dreamstime. After looking it up, I discovered it is a stock photo platform. I immediately addressed this, as claiming stock images as your own is illegal and a serious copyright issue.

What struck me most is that I noticed this purely because of a mistake. That image could have easily been posted on a client’s business account, with potentially serious consequences, including account penalties if a copyright claim were filed.

This experience really woke me up to the reality we are navigating today. Fake accounts. Fake creators. AI-generated images. AI influencers. Copyright risks. The lines between what is real and what is not are becoming increasingly blurred.

𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝗻.

Last December, I decided to prioritize my work life balance even more. The first step was fully committing to a long break of five weeks in 2026. No laptop. No work messages. No emails. No tasks.

But a plan like this only becomes real through action. I blocked my calendar for the summer period and informed my long term clients that I would arrange a replacement during my extended leave. When new projects came my way, I was transparent and asked whether this break would be a dealbreaker. If it was, I chose to say no.

As a freelancer, turning down work and income is a risk. But I truly believe that money continues to flow. I cannot attract the right projects or clients from a state of exhaustion. And this is about more than recharging. I want my life to be so much more than work and other commitments.

So what will I do with all that free time?

I'm already super excited to take my sons to Suriname and show them my home, the country where I was born and raised. I am also looking forward to doing whatever I feel like doing. Bringing the kids to daycare and going back home to sleep. Cooking. Watching Netflix. Reading books. Spending time in my garden. Going to the beach. Go hiking. Visiting museums again. And in between all of it, taking lots of naps.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐋𝐮𝐬𝐡

My favorite brand is Lush, that makes fresh handmade cosmetics. From a marketing perspective, they set a powerful example of what strong, value driven branding looks like.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬
Lush is built on clear values: cruelty free and sustainability focused. They fight against animal testing. Many products come without packaging. When packaging is needed, it is made from recycled plastic. Their loyalty initiative where customers collect 5 empty containers to receive 1 free product not only stimulates repeat purchases, but also encourages conscious behavior and waste reduction.

𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡
Every product comes with a sticker of the person who made it. This adds authenticity, builds trust and strengthens the brand’s human connection. Consumers don’t just buy soap or shampoo, they buy a story and a person behind the product.

𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞
Lush is a master at sensory marketing. Walking into their store instantly awakens your senses through scent, color and texture. You can smell a Lush store from meters away, and inside everything is visually appealing and easy to explore. Friendly employees walk around offering guidance, demos and samples. Customers can smell, touch and test products, and if you’re lucky you might even get a mini hand massage with their body butter. This creates a memorable in store experience that goes beyond traditional retail.

𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭
Aside from their operations that aims to reduce their footprint, the Lush Charity Pot supports causes around the world to expand their impact.

𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧
Leaving the world lusher than we found it. A simple and powerful line that captures everything they stand for.
