Facebook just handed your audience a steering wheel. 🎛️

On October 13, Meta announced "Your Algorithm" for Facebook. People can now tell Feed and Reels, in plain language, what they want to see more or less of. Add or manage topics from the three-dot menu on any post, or type a request, and Meta says the changes apply within the same session. It builds on the Instagram version that launched in December 2025.

Meta hasn't said which countries or languages get it first, or whether it affects ads. So treat it as a signal, not a rulebook. The direction is clear, though: viewers are being asked to state their interests out loud.

Our take for brands:
• Be clearly about something. A sharp topic is easier to match to what people ask for.
• Lead with value in the first line, because "Not interested" can now trigger follow-up questions.
• Audit your last 10 posts: would each one make sense to a person who asked for exactly this topic?

Is your brand a topic people would actually ask Facebook for?

Most retargeting annoys people for one reason. Everyone who touched your site sees the same ad, at the same pace, forever.

One change you can make today: split your website visitors by how recently they came, and give each group its own message. Build a 1 to 3 day audience, a 4 to 14 day audience, and a 15 to 30 day audience. The newest group just left your page, so remind them of the exact thing they looked at and make the next step obvious. The middle group needs a reason to come back, so answer the objection you hear most on sales calls. The oldest group has mostly moved on. Keep a light, low pressure ad running there and accept that the audience is smaller.

Two guardrails matter here. Exclude people who already bought or filled in your form, and set an end date on the window so nobody sits in retargeting forever. If your spend is small, cap how often the same person sees the ad.

We think that last part is where most retargeting goes wrong. Done properly, retargeting reads like a helpful reminder rather than a campaign that follows people around.

Threads is testing a badge that rewards conversation, not follower counts.

Meta's new "Gems" test, live in the US, puts a purple badge on public posts and direct replies that spark real discussion. Meta says the system picks them automatically based on perspective, originality and actual back-and-forth, and cross-posted content doesn't qualify.

Why it matters for brands: a platform is telling us what it wants more of. Not reach bait, but posts people genuinely respond to.

Three things worth testing:
1. Publish natively, with a clear point of view, instead of recycling content from other channels.
2. End with a real question you actually want answered.
3. Reply to the people who respond. Gems count direct replies to the original post, so the thread under your post matters.

It's a US-only test, so treat it as a signal, not a rule.

Which of your posts last month started the best conversation?

How do you decide when to switch an ad off? Give it a few more days, or kill it the moment the cost per result looks wrong?

Our rule of thumb, for what it's worth.

Before you judge an ad, decide what a result means for you: a purchase, or a booked call. Then count how many of those the ad produced. Not impressions. Not clicks. If it has barely any results yet, you are reading noise, not a verdict. Give it room.

Switching off early makes sense when the problem sits above the numbers. The offer is wrong for that audience. The landing page is broken. The creative says something you no longer stand behind. Spend keeps climbing and nothing moves at any step of the funnel. Patience will not fix those.

Leaving it running makes sense when the creative is reaching the right people and the funnel works end to end. Then the small sample is the only thing wrong.

One habit we like: write your cut off rule down before you launch. Something like "if this ad has spent enough to produce a few results and hasn't, we pause it and test a new angle." Decide it while you are calm, so you are not negotiating with yourself at eleven at night.

Tell us your rule in the comments, or message the Page if you want a second opinion on a campaign.

Facebook is testing a feed that opens on video, not posts. 🎬

Meta is expanding a test in India, also running in Indonesia, where some users land straight in a full-screen Reels feed. The classic News Feed moves to a second tab, and users can opt out. Facebook head Tom Alison said in July that the approach targets people who want more video, and that a US launch could be explored next year.

Meta hasn't published results, so this is a signal, not a verdict. But it points one way: the first thing people see may increasingly be video.

What to do now:
• Take your top three messages and ask: could each work as a 15-second vertical video?
• Keep photos and text posts for depth, but don't let them be your only way to be discovered.
• Test one video-first post this week and compare reach with your usual format.

Every new Meta campaign brings up the same question: how much do we spend to learn something useful?

Start by picking the one thing the test should answer. Which audience, which offer, or which creative. One question per test.

Set a budget you can leave running for the whole test window without flinching. A budget you pause after two days teaches you nothing.

Keep the structure small. Split a modest budget across a long list of ad sets and no single ad set gathers enough data to compare.

Pick one conversion event you really track, and check that it fires correctly before any money goes out.

Before launch, write down what result would make you scale, hold or stop. Then judge the test against that note, and not against the first day's numbers.

Our view: a test budget buys information rather than sales volume. Spend enough to get a clear read on one question, and keep the rest of your money for the thing that works.

Your static ads just became video inventory. 🎬

At Advertising Week in New York (Oct 6), Meta said Advantage+ Creative's ability to generate video from static assets is now generally available. Its business assistant is also rolling out memory of past campaigns, seasonal patterns and your stated goals, while chat-driven campaign actions are still only in testing, per Social Media Today's coverage.

What this means in practice:
• Audit your best-performing static images. They're now raw material for video tests.
• Keep a human eye on brand look, claims and tone before anything goes live.
• Test AI video against your existing creative, not instead of it.
• Availability can vary by account and region, so check your Ads Manager.

The tools are getting faster. Strategy and taste still decide what's worth running.

Which of your static ads would you turn into video first?

Carousels just got easier to build. 🎠

Instagram's Edits app now includes a carousel editor, according to PetaPixel (Oct 7) and other trade coverage. You can combine photos, video and text on one canvas, using the tools Edits already offers. It's live on iOS, Android is described as "coming soon", and some users may need to switch it on under Labs.

Why it matters: carousels reward brands that can tell a short story swipe by swipe, and mixing video with stills can mean juggling several tools. This puts it in one place.

Three ways to test it:
1. Turn one launch or case study into a 5-slide story: problem, approach, outcome.
2. Open with a short video slide, then add stills that give detail.
3. End with one clear next step on the final slide.

Meta just shut its ad doors to a competitor.

As of October 8, Facebook and Instagram have stopped accepting ads from TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, according to Reuters-sourced reports. The restriction covers seven markets: the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, and reportedly extends to third-party campaigns that send people to TikTok and other ByteDance apps. Meta's position: it doesn't have to run ads from a competitor. TikTok hasn't publicly responded.

What it means for your brand:
• If any Meta campaign drives people to a TikTok profile or link in those markets, check it today
• Don't build your growth on one platform's goodwill; rules can change overnight
• Grow assets you own: your email list, website and community

Before you hand your ads to an agency, tell us what a good customer looks like to you.

"More leads" tells us nothing. Write it in plain words: what they buy, the area you cover, the budget range you see in real deals, and the enquiries you would rather never get. That last part helps us most, in my experience.

Then describe how a sale happens on your side. Who picks up the phone, how fast, what happens after hours, and the moment an enquiry becomes a client in your records.

We can decide who sees the ad and what it says. We cannot guess your definition of good. Without it, campaigns drift toward whatever is cheapest to collect, and you pay for conversations your sales team cannot use.

So write half a page and send it to your agency before the next campaign goes live. Update it every month with examples: enquiries that turned into sales, and ones that went nowhere.
