It was an honour and a pleasure to participate in the production of parts using 3D printing to create the costume for the new theatrical adaptation of Bastard, presented after thirty years, directed by Petr Gazdík.
The show premiered on 20 April 2024 at the Music Stage of the Municipal Theatre Brno (MDB) .cz .
The basis of the 3D costume design, from which the individual parts were printed, was a 3D scan of the actors’ characters.
This work is based on the classic structure of the dramatic text, inspired by the biblical story. The main protagonist, Bastard, goes through a colourful journey in which he battles the figures of the Holy Spirit and Satan, who hungers for his soul. The play highlights the questions that have resounded through humanity for many centuries, “Who are we?” “Where are we going?”.
CUBELAB - 3D printing studio was approached with a request to print a prepared 3D design of the Homunculus character’s costume, the author of the design is Petr Hloušek and the costume designers are Andrea Kučerová and Bára Kuropatová. All pieces were printed with PLA material, which is made from renewable resources and is good for detail. On the surface, however, it looks like ordinary plastic can also be easily further modified.
After printing and subsequent finishing, the individual pieces were handed over to the costume designers, followed by finishing the pieces, patinating them and fixing them to the original fabric of the costume.
The material supplier for the 3D printing of the parts was the Czech manufacturer of high quality filament Abaflex .cz.
