IN VOLUME 002 of Architecture of the Club 🏛️ we couldnt help ourselves but try to capture the essence of Berghain as one of the most world renowned clubs.
In this series we explore the legendary spaces that define Berlin’s nightlife but aren’t always recognized for their historical and architectural depth.
VOLUME 002: Berghain – The Cathedral of Techno
Located at Am Wriezener Bahnhof, Berghain stands as a monument to Berlin’s industrial past, housed in a former 1950s power plant. Known for its towering concrete walls, cavernous dance floors, and brutalist design, the space embodies a raw, utilitarian aesthetic that amplifies its reputation as the world’s most famous techno artists.
Beyond the music, Berghain is a study in spatial transformation—where industrial heritage meets underground culture.
As Johan Andersson writes in his study of q***r nightlife: “Berghain encapsulates ‘Ermöglichungsarchitektur’, an architecture that ‘enables’ various activities associated with physical pleasure and where ‘form and function’ are in ‘synthesis’.”
Berghain is a prime example of germanys evolution, where the echoes of the past reverberate through pulsing basslines and shadowy corridors.
