"Cultural Bridges at Teufelsberg – Indian Street Artist Anpu Varkey Creates a Monument of Connection in Berlin.

The Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan in Bangalore, India, a vibrant high-tech metropolis with a flourishing creative scene, sent renowned Indian street artist Anpu Varkey to Berlin as part of the bangaloREsidency-Expanded programme. The centrepoint of the residency: the legendary Teufelsberg, now one of the world’s largest open-air street art galleries.

During her six-week stay (June–August 2025), Varkey created a large-scale mural that explores the history of Teufelsberg, its origin from the rubble of World War II, and its role as a place of cultural transformation."

“This mural is inspired by the resilience and determination of the Trümmerfrauen (rubble women). Since Teufelsberg was built from Berlin’s ruins, it seemed fitting to establish a connection. It shows a woman breaking through a massive wall – a symbol of both our not-so-distant past and the barriers we continue to build today. Tear down walls!” explains the artist."
