In 2018, Manloy Metal Industrial Co., Ltd. celebrated its 60th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, the company decided to develop an anniversary gift package based on the 12 Chinese zodiac signs. The core design concept is inspired by Manloy’s product lines. For example, the origami-style zodiac signs reflect the insulation and paper-based materials sold by the company and the fine stripe pattern is a derivation of Manloy’s industry-leading cutting & slitting services. These elements attribute to the brand’s values of precision, consistency and commitment to quality.

This exclusive anniversary memento includes a main gift box enclosed with a company brochure, ceramic tea tumbler, High Mountain Oolong tea bags and a 2018 desk calendar. Each item and vendor were carefully chosen for their strong Taiwanese values and identity including that of collaboration, family ties and hospitality, mirroring key values of Manloy.

Manloy Metal Industrial Co., Ltd. is a third generation family business based in Taiwan. It is a global service center for the transformer and motor industries. Since 1958, Manloy has been importing quality materials, providing state of the art slitting and core lamination cutting services. Main products include electrical steel, insulation materials, transformer components and accessories. Understanding the beyond value-add of a well designed brand, Manloy launched a new Corporate Design campaign in 2017 to strengthen their global and regional strategies and recognition.

Manloy took a holistic approach by evaluating their founding principles, core values and business strategy. As a result, the design development has a clear goal and direction throughout the implementation process. The visuals and design elements incorporate the company’s inner values and sends a coherent message to the industry. Through this new Corporate Design, Manloy hopes to inspire other traditional Taiwanese companies to modernise their brand and consider design as a strategic advantage.

For the Berlin based agency dan pearlman – who developed the overall new “Panda Garden” for the Berlin Zoo – I’ve designed a complete set of brush painting illustrations, Chinese calligraphy and in addition a new suitable typeface as part of the compound’s visual communication. All brush paintings are created by hand with an original Chinese writing brush (Maobi).

The Chinese characters and the new typeface are designed digitally based on the calligraphy style called “regular script” (Kaishu). The goal was to create a harmonious and consistent look, which combines eastern and western elements as well as educational and atmospheric aspects.

A playful approach of a complete set of illustrated Chinese Zodiac Signs, which shapes are based on simple geometrical forms (inspired by toy blocks). It shall setup a different style to the usually very traditional or comic-like designed versions you can see everywhere.
