Over three weeks ago, the world as we know it stopped. Despite all the horrible news and images that we’re confronted with on a daily basis, most of us are slowly trying to re-awake their routines – while those directly affected by the war have to flee their homes, the countries and neighborhoods they grew up in and felt secure and protected in until February 24th.

Incredible solidarity resulted in tons of different initiatives, all of which are meant to improve the situations of the ones impacted the most: Innocent Ukrainian families. Thus, we’d like to raise attention for an initiative born within the tech ecosystem: EU4UA.

Launched by the co-founders of Jobgether, Arnaud Devigne based in France, Alexandre Hernandez based in Spain, Juan Bourgois based in Belgium and the CTO Alexis Rodriguez based in Colombia, www.eu4ua.org allows Ukrainian refugees to connect with European citizens willing to provide free emergency accommodation in no more than a click.

Users can share their own housing or make one of the 11 million empty houses in Europe available. The project founders’ aim to enable all refugees to find decent housing for free and therefore avoid the harsh conditions faced in refugee camps. Every hour, up to 15,000 people are connecting to the platform and within the first 3 days nearly 4000 families including 2000 refugee families and as many host families registered on the platform.

There is a new meetup in town! Berlin Tech Leads is the new event series hosted by Vinted bringing together the leaders of Berlin’s progressive tech scene.

Every fifth founder in Germany has an immigrant background. 🙌This is the result of the evaluation of the German Start-up Monitor, which surveyed 2,000 start-ups in Germany. According to the survey, founders from the first and second generation of migrants have special characteristics that are required for a start-up: A solid academic foundation and a willingness to take risks.

We celebrate this trend towards an open, international, and inclusive startup ecosystem! 👏

WHAT A YEAR 🔥🔥🔥

As 2021 is slowly (well, not that slowly) but surely coming to a close, we wanted to share that this week marks our 8th year as Openers (well, officially, it was last Sunday)! And what can we say? Previously we’d have thrown a KICK-ASS party for our entire team, all our clients, partners and friends; we have to postpone that again for familiar reasons. But let's not get soaked up with melancholy. We can't and don't want to complain.

We had a thrilling 12 months with so much going on. To highlight a few happenings:

🚀 We've welcomed many new and old faces - glad you're on board Natalie Torbett, Lisa-Marie Scheller, Fabian Giese, Alina Korteweg, Judith Lommer, Dorottya Tima. More new talents will be joining us in February 2022, and we can't wait to grow further!

🚀 Speaking of new faces: our new CI went live earlier this year! If you have not done so yet, check out the new look website - opnrs.com.
We've been welcoming many exciting new projects to the fam. Thanks for your continuous trust: Gorillas, Sorare, Templafy, Treatwell, Aiven, Hier Foods, Google for Startups, La Famiglia VC, taz, TARABYA LTD, i-potentials GmbH and EIT Food.

🚀 It’s been a year of many unicorns 🦄 - we were pleased to celebrate more of our partners hitting the $1bn valuation benchmark. A big congrats to Sorare, Gorillas and Pleo!

🚀 We´ve produced 24 (virtual) events, aka two a month. WOW!
Honestly, it would take too long to calculate the 100% accurate number, but we´ve had an impressive year in media coverage numbers and clippings. We must have hit the 1.000 and beyond! Another WOW!

🚀 We´ve been welcoming 3 (in words THREE!) Openers babies to the world (ok one of them in late 2020) - so no worries, our future talent pool is growing just nicely :) We're very happy for our new mum Sophie and new dads Moritz Förster und Tobias Hönig. Much love!

🚀 Although we love our daily hybrid office life, it's been challenging from time to time to decide if, when or how to meet in person. As a team, with you, our partners, and the broader community at events. Still, we managed to have some great team activities, off-sites and an EOY dinner, and some fruitful in-person client workshops. We hope to do more of these in 2022!
