CONCERT OF THE MONTH IN BERLIN
THE CELLO IN JAZZ :: THE DIMITRI MONSTEIN ENSEMBLE AND ITS VISIONARY SOUND WORLD
In "chamber jazz" the cello begins to play a larger role in jazz, since the string quartet was used more frequently in what is known as "third-stream jazz". A good example of this is recordings by the Modern Jazz Quartet in collaboration with the Beaux Art String Quartet. In this musical outing, the quartet parts are written out and the players are classical musicians, not jazz musicians. But soon the strings wanted to create real jazz. Bands such as Akut Dixon's "Quartette Indigo" formed in 1973, the Uptown String Quartet that was involved with Max Roach on his "Double Quartet" recordings, and later known as the Turtle Island String Quartet with Mark Summer on cello: all these groups used the classical string quartet instrumentation, 2 violins, viola and cello to improvise and all members play solos.
The Dimitri Monstein Ensemble follows in the footsteps of earlier classical and jazz formations and continues the creative, improvised cello music and illustrates the increasing importance of this instrument in contemporary music. The band leader is a sought-after Swiss drummer from Zurich is a wanderer between the worlds. He combines classical music with contemporary jazz on his drums. The audience raves about the warmth and the tonal colors that the cellists of the Monstein Ensemble produce. For Dimitri Monstein, the cello is the instrument closest to the human voice. He used the Corona period of standstill and worked on a new concept of melodies, bows and groove. A new album after the award-winning debut "Landscape" has been created and is entitled "The Cello Session". He presents the new songs for the first time in Berlin in the jazz club b-flat. The listeners are presented with spherical soundscapes that dissolve the boundaries between classical music and jazz. The drums, which are at the center along with the cello, play a double role. It is not only the solo instrument of the program, but also serves as a rhythmic link between the members of the ensemble.
