Another year - another portrait of Hermione Granger. I started this tradition 5 years ago, and I am happy I did. I absolutely love to see how my art evolves.

I am happy to share with you some of the work I've been doing for the past month. The client gave me full control over creative choices and it's been such a pleasure to work with so much artistic freedom.

I urge you, when you hire an illustrator, to let them work with as much freedom as possible. I personally think it releases so much more potential and at the end of the day will benefit you as a client. Let artists be artists.

I am posting my illustration of the Human heart cross-section again, due to some anatomical incorrectness in a previous version of it. A reminder that the profession of a medical illustrator comes with certain responsibilities. Accuracy of anatomy being one of them.

Should the depiction of a realistic thing be photorealistic? Well, if you are into that sort of art then yes! But I've always have been a big fan of the more raw-looking paintings, something that would still be easy to read, anatomically correct, but with fun textures and fresh colors.

Here is my illustration of the facial nerve anatomy, based on the course of a human dissection that I've attended. I feel that especially because of the nature of the object in reality I've decided to go for almost a cartoonish look. Death is not pleasant to look at. But art can still be.

Dear all, I would like to share with you my watercolor illustration of a hazelnut bud. Our street is full of them and local squires have quite a feast. I also uploaded a work in progress. Usually, I build up the watercolors until the painting is 95% finished and then put the details and final touches in Adobe Photoshop. It probably would have been much faster to draw it digitally, but for me, nothing can substitute the feel of a physical painting. I hope you would enjoy viewing this illustration as much as I have enjoyed painting it.

When I had a dissection course at the university hospital I wanted, given a choice, to dissect a human head. Luckily I've got one! The reason behind this choice was my neverending love for portraits. The human face and head are a combination of so many different structures and it was fascinating to study what was lying behind the planes of the face.

The human head study was one of the best fundamental knowledge I've learned as a scientific illustrator. And I plan to use it as much as I can.

I always wanted to make a scientific infographic poster, that would include a simple explanation and a bit of humor. Now that I can make some projects for myself I present to you my poster on the anatomy of a raptorial appendage of the peacock mantis shrimp. Enjoy!

I would like to show you today this lovely illustration of a step-by-step surgery, performed to help patients with Dupuytren's contracture. It is a quite common condition amongst older people, predominantly caucasian males. What happens is: palmar aponeurosis tissues become less elastic and intertwines with the scar tissue. This blocks the tendons of the fingers to move freely, allowing the finger to fully extend. At the late stages, this condition can bring a lot of discomfort and pain, which surgery aims to relieve, by cutting out the damaged tissue and releasing the tendon. Although seemingly easy, this surgery has its dangers, particularly the neurovascular bundles, running along with the tendons, that need to be isolated before cutting the aponeurosis. If performed incorrectly a patient can lose the innervation to part of the digits.
