Consent isn't a conversation you have once when they're older. It comes from moments like this when a child learns in real time that "stop" is not a suggestion. It's a complete sentence.

Looking for ways to bring more of these moments into your home? A great resource for starting the conversation with kids -- girls and boys alike -- is "Let's Talk About Body Boundaries, Consent, and Respect" for ages 4 to 7 at https://www.amightygirl.com/body-boundaries

For older kids, we recommend the excellent "Consent (for Kids!)" for ages 6 to 10 at https://www.amightygirl.com/consent-for-kids

There is also a helpful guide for teens on topics such as consent and coercion, "Real Talk About S*x and Consent: What Every Teen Needs to Know," for ages 13 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/real-talk-about-sex-and-consent

To discuss topics such as sexual harassment, respect, and consent with tweens -- both girls and boys alike -- we recommend the insightful novel "Maybe He Just Likes You" for ages 10 and up at https://www.amightygirl.com/maybe-he-just-likes-you

I was once asked if I could even see properly with my eyes.

I was born and raised in a small town in Germany to Chinese parents. Back then, I was the only Asian in my class. Fun-loving classmates would regularly ask me to open my eyes or question whether I could really see.

And indeed, if I opened my eyes more, I was able to see a bit more.

But over time, I learned that vision isn’t just determined by the size of our eyes. It’s shaped by what we’ve learned to notice and focus on.

As a visual science communicator, my trained eyes see how great science can be made accessible and appealing.

Curious what that looks like?

In my visual design trainings for researchers and communicators, I teach you how to see it—and how to apply it in your own work:

in your

posters
figures
social media posts
and images.

And to build on my strengths, I thought of calling them:

The Watchful Eye 👁️

When it comes to visual design, your eyes are your most important tool. Take good care of them!

As a visual designer, I have spent decades working in front of a screen. It’s hard on your eyes.

In recent years, I have realized that I need to take care of my eyes, so I intentionally choose to give them more breaks. I increased the time I spend outdoors doing activities that use my eyes differently. For example, I started sailing five years ago, and every sailing trip is a vacation for my eyes.

For the last four days, I went on vacation with members of my water sports club. We sailed Polyfalks in Friesland, Netherlands. Despite the lack of sleep, mosquitoes, scorching heat, lack of regular showers, and nervous sailing partners, it was relaxing and energizing, as always. ❤️

I experienced injustice early in life. In my family and in society—and I didn’t like it.

Perhaps that’s why I have always been drawn to initiatives and people who challenge these injustices.

When my peers started working at advertising agencies promoting to***co and luxury cars, I couldn’t bring myself to join them. So I looked for alternatives. When my bosses laughed at my idealism and said it was all about money, I felt naïve. Deep down, though, I refused to accept that.

Working with researchers made me feel at home in the best possible way. Of course, science isn’t free from injustice. But I meet more people who are driven by curiosity, motivated by purpose, and committed to making the world a little better.

Collaborating with researchers on this shared mission is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Today, I help researchers, science communicators, and research organizations use strategic visual communication to increase visibility, build shared understanding, and strengthen the impact of their work.

Together, we create scientific posters, presentations, figures, and other communication materials that help the right people understand the research—and act on it.

I believe visual communication is about much more than making things look good. It’s about creating connection. When people understand each other more easily, trust grows. Collaboration becomes possible. And that’s how science creates even greater impact.

Through hands-on trainings and consulting, I teach practical design principles that help teams communicate more clearly, increase their visibility, and create visual materials they feel confident sharing.

Good research alone isn’t enough to make it seen.

I know this from experience. When I started my own design studio, it took me a while to understand that the quality of your work and the way you present it are two completely different things. During that time, good ideas got rejected, opportunities were lost, and sometimes payment didn’t come through—not because the work wasn’t good, but because its value wasn’t coming across clearly enough.

Today, I support researchers and science communicators at exactly that point. My workshops are about making your research visible in a way that ensures it is understood, remembered, and carried forward.

In one to two days, you learn how to structure your content clearly and present it visually in a way that lets it have its full impact. We work directly on your own materials—so you don’t just leave with new knowledge, but with concrete results you can use straight away.

You’ll develop, among other things:

👉 scientific graphics that make even complex content easy to grasp quickly
👉 presentations and posters that guide the audience rather than overwhelm them
👉 visuals suited for social media and media outreach
👉 design principles that save you time in the long run and increase your visibility

Imagine your next presentation isn’t just heard—but truly understood. Your graphics aren’t skimmed over, but looked at more closely. And your research reaches people outside your immediate field.

That’s exactly what this is about.

Your research deserves to be seen. Let’s make sure it is.
