“Why should I hire a website consultant to create my website, when I could just ask my VA to create one?” I was speaking to a business owner recently who asked me this great question.

Obviously, it depends on the skill level and experience of your VA. But for me, the biggest differences are:

A website consultant will:

✅ Tell YOU what you need on your website and in which order, for it to bring results. You can’t expect your VA to know everything!

✅ Advise you about the best platforms for your specific business.

✅ Stay up to date with all the latest developments in design, tech, legal requirements, accessibility etc.

I often advise clients that it’s okay in the early years of your business to save money on your website by doing it yourself, or having a VA create it for you.

But once you’ve been in business for a few years, there comes a point where you want it to work harder for you.

You want to be able to share your website, confident that prospects get the right message from your site and branding.

You want to know that you have a solid marketing foundation in place that will support you as you grow and scale.

And when you’re at this point, you really need a web consultant who can bring together all the elements of tech, design, copy, SEO, and branding into a seamless experience.

❓ What do you want most out of your website?

👉🏽If you need a website that is expertly set up so that you can attract and convert high-end clients with ease, DM me, and let’s talk! I train you AND your VA on how to use the website after launch, so she can continue supporting you!

I create goal-focused websites.

That means it’s my job to combine all the elements of design, tech, branding, copy, and SEO so they work together seamlessly to achieve whatever goal my clients have for their web presence.

For most of my clients, this is to bring in more of the right prospects to their business.

✅ This means they have the peace of mind when prospects check out their website, it truly reflects their business as it is now.

✅ Their potential clients know within seconds through the branding, design and copy that they're in the right place.

✅ All the information they need is available to them seamlessly so they can develop the trust they need to take the next step.

Some of my clients have other goals too, such as to establish their presence as a thought leader in their industry, to attract speaking gigs or podcast appearances, or to promote products or programs. And I can work with them to ensure their websites help them achieve these goals too.

This is very different from a “brochure” website that reads more like an online resume, or a catalog for the business.

These websites don’t convert as well as goal-focused websites because they don’t take the prospects on a journey that starts with first awareness and guides them through to booking a call.

❓ What are your goals for your website?

One of the delights (and curses!) of being a website creator is the constant tinkering I do to my own site 🤓 👩🏽‍💻 📱

I love to learn and improve my skills, so I’m constantly reading, researching and doing training in the latest developments in website design.

And that means I update my own site a LOT!

I want my prospects to see a representation of my style when they land on my site, so they can imagine the sort of outcomes they can expect when they work with me – obviously geared to their own business, mission, and branding.

I recently updated my website (again!)

This looked like:

👉 Leveling up my branding to reflect where my business is now.
👉 A copy update to bring in all the changes I’ve made to my messaging and packages.
👉 An image overhaul to strike the right balance between images of me to create connection, images of websites I’ve created to illustrate my work, and some stock images to attract the right people to my business.

This time, although I wrote the copy myself, I asked my copywriter Sue Holloway to edit the copy for me. It was so useful to not only get her input on the best words to use, but also get a third party perspective, and to be able to bounce ideas around.

I’d love your feedback! Take a look at the site [link in the first comment] and let me know what you think!

I started working on a client’s website recently and realized that her existing site wasn’t connected to Google Search Console. This can have a huge effect on the performance of your website. Here’s why…

Often when clients come to me with a DIY website or one that’s been created on a limited budget, I find glaring errors that are preventing it from working hard for them.

One common error is the site not being connected to Google Search Console. This means you’re missing out on valuable data that you can use to track, tweak, and improve the performance of your website.

This particular client had no idea her site wasn’t connected. Why would she? She isn’t a web designer or techie. She trusted the designer who’d created her site to take care of it.

And this lack of data, combined with the fact she didn’t have a keyword strategy behind her website, meant it wasn’t ranking for the keywords that her potential clients were typing into Google. And that meant she wasn’t attracting the right people.

Once we connected her site, within three weeks we could see a huge range of data points we can use to increase its performance.

Such as:

➡️ Number of web searches
➡️ Pages that are indexed/not indexed
➡️ Number of clicks, impressions, click-through rates, and length of time users stay on site
➡️ What people are looking for when they find her site

Among others.

In order to have a high-performing website that attracts the right clients to your business, you need a solid infrastructure based on data. And that starts with information you can get from Google Search Console plus a solid foundation for your web content, built on an informed keyword strategy.

What data points do you find most useful to measure the performance of your website?

How many hats are you wearing?🎩 🧢 ⛑️ And do you HAVE to wear them all?

I posted recently about talking to a business owner who told me she has no interest in marketing. She just wants to hand it over. And this post obviously struck a nerve, because many business owners reached out to tell me they felt the same way.

I’ve always found it fascinating that when you start a business, you end up wearing so many hats.

You might have gone into business because you wanted to pursue your talent in coaching, consultancy, or as a service provider, but suddenly you also need to wear so many hats: you need to be an accountant, a project manager, a marketer, and so much more.

And while some of these things might interest you, others probably don’t.

As most of my clients have been in business for a few years, generally they’ve figured out what they want to do themselves and what they want to outsource.

And many of them (lucky for me!) have decided to outsource their website strategy.

Because it isn’t easy to keep up-to-date with all the developments, and understand all the details, especially if this isn’t your zone of genius.

And it can be really difficult when you're in the weeds of running your business to spot the stories that will make your marketing sing to the right people.

So, if you are currently wearing all the hats in your business and know it’s taking time away from the roles and responsibilities of your true expertise, perhaps it’s time to consider outsourcing.

The most important thing is to find someone you can TRUST to do a good job for you.

As well as giving you the peace of mind that your marketing is in expert hands, you also get the added benefit of a new perspective on your business from a third party, which is worth its weight in GOLD.

Now I want to hear from you: What do you outsource?

When you land on a website where the business owner has paid attention to their branding, it’s like being inside a jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces fit together beautifully.

Great branding:

✅ Focuses your prospect’s mind by setting the tone for their experience on your site.

✅ Makes them feel whatever it is you want them to feel: energized, safe, calm, or something else.

✅ Helps them to connect with and remember your business whenever they come across it.

Many of my clients offer premium services. Their branding goes a long way to creating a high-end image for their business.

And this means they attract the right clients and provide a great experience when they land on their website – which makes prospects much more likely to reach out for a call, and hire them in the long run!

When people land on my website, I want them to feel supported, at ease that everything is thought out for them, and empowered to grow their business. Click through to my homepage. [Link in the first comment.] Do you think my branding communicates this?

I am like that weird kid that raises her hand when the teacher forgets to give the class homework 🙋🏽‍♀️...Yeah, I’m just a nerd like that and can’t get enough of my business 🤓 😁

I was talking to a business owner recently who told me she was not interested in marketing AT ALL. And that’s totally fine. She’s amazing at what she does, she doesn’t need to conquer marketing as well. But it really made me think…

I love working on my business.

🧡 I love doing my own marketing.
🧡 I love creating my strategy, tracking results, and tweaking it to make it perform even better.
🧡 I love doing my own graphic and web design.

I enjoy every part of it, and can’t WAIT for Mondays to roll around!

Am I crazy?

Or maybe I’m just doing what I’m meant to be doing.

Maybe the fact that I love doing all these things for my own business, is the reason why I also enjoy doing them for my clients.

I only hope my energy and enthusiasm translates onto the screen in the websites I create!

What do you love doing most in your business?

Listen👂🏽: If you want a website that is created with conversions in mind, by a website and marketing nerd 🙈… I mean, EXPERT, who really cares about all the little details, DM me, and let’s talk. I’m now taking clients for Q4 2023 and Q1 2024.

When clients come to me they often say they want a BETTER website. They often think this means they want a better LOOKING website. But what they actually need is a better PERFORMING website. ⬇️

What makes a good website?

✅ One that performs well in a Google search.
✅ One that is well-structured and provides a great client experience.
✅ A clear and consistent call to action that is repeated throughout the site.
✅ Branding that represents the look, feel and values of the business.
✅ An understanding of accessibility issues and tech.
✅ Copy that takes prospects on a journey from finding the website, consuming the information they need to develop trust, and being persuaded to take the next step.

So when you engage with someone to create a website for you, you need more than a pixel pusher, or a provider who understands design.

You need a strategist (or team) that brings together expertise in design, tech, copy and SEO.

Over to you… What makes a good website, in your opinion?

I’m a perfectionist. And I’m at PEACE with that 🧘🏽‍♀️

For a long time, I fought against my perfectionist tendencies because I know it’s important sometimes to let things go.

But actually, I’ve decided to embrace being a perfectionist! Because, in a web designer and branding strategist it’s actually a really effective characteristic!

✅ You want someone who works hard on the tiny details.
✅ You want someone who makes your site fit the brief you’ve given them.
✅ You want someone who pays attention to get all the moving parts of your site working in sync.

You also want to work with a web designer who gets the job DONE though! Which is why I take a deep dive into each site, and only work on one at a time. You know, when I work with you, you have 100% of my attention!

It’s also why I work to a tried and tested schedule so we both know exactly when each phase of the website will be complete.

And it’s why my packages include a quality assurance period after I hand it over – because that means I CAN hand it over, knowing you have enough time to test everything out and get acquainted with your new website.

So honestly, I’ve decided I’m kind of proud to call myself a perfectionist! I’m going to stop beating myself up about it!

Are you planning to upgrade your website in 2024? If so, let’s chat! Send me a DM and we’ll figure out your schedule.

So… how do you actually get found on Google? Is there any magic trick everyone is using, and why is my website not ranking?

SEO is a long-term game. But if you start NOW, you will reap the results over time.

Let’s start by saying this: It’s not enough to pick out a bunch of keywords and consider your website optimized for SEO. And you should also not expect to be on page 1 of Google right after website launch (or re-launch).

You need an SEO strategy that starts with thorough keyword research and incorporates keywords chosen for their search volume and competitiveness.

It’s also important to consider SEO in the way the site is structured, the on-page and off-page SEO elements added, as well as the technical SEO aspects (speed, security, and a couple of other things that I take care of for my clients).

Because, although it’s not possible for your website to rank on the first page of search engine results from day one, if you EVER want to see your site up there you need to start as soon as possible.

That’s why when I create websites for clients, I work with an SEO strategist.

Rather than splitting my focus away from the branding and design parts, I rely on the awesome Michelle Bourbonniere to create an expert SEO strategy.

Your SEO will help your clients find you, along with any other methods you have for raising awareness (such as social media and networking).

And when they land on your site you’ll be confident the site is structured to take your prospects on a journey that leads to them booking a call with you (or whatever next step you’ve identified.)

Because that means you can focus on the pieces of your business only you can do, or the things you really love to do, or even take time off! – CONFIDENT that you have systems working in the background to fill your pipeline.

Be wary of web designers who promise that an optimized website will solve all your problems…

That ISN’T true. You need to drive traffic to it, and you need to actually talk to your clients – I can’t do that for you!

But I can set your website up with a solid SEO strategy.

And I can make sure the structure, design, branding, and messaging all work together seamlessly to inform and convert your prospects.

If you know you need to update your website in the next 12 months, set up a call and I’ll help you figure out the best strategy.

Do you have any questions about SEO? Post them below. I’d love to help.
