EVENT RECAP: We look back on a wonderful summer party hosted by the friends of the Lenbachhaus on 28 July 2025. The weather was changeable, but the mood in the atrium of the Lenbachhaus was cheerful throughout. 🌦️✨
Despite cool breezes and grey clouds, hundreds of guests gathered for the Friends of the Lenbachhaus summer party – an evening of art, music and Munich elegance.

The board of the Förderverein Lenbachhaus e.V. (Friends of the Lenbachhaus Association) paraded through the building in a festive procession – accompanied by trumpet fanfares – to thank all those who keep the museum running on a daily basis.

In front of the museum, a bright yellow lemon-shaped bar provided a cheerful contrast to the grey weather – like a little sun on the forecourt. Inside, there was a warm celebration with good food, inspiring conversations and an atmosphere full of openness and esprit.

An evening that shows how much energy there is in a committed art scene – and how enriching it is when people come together to celebrate culture. We are already looking forward to next year!

EXHIBITION TIP: WAKING VISIONS, Samurai Museum Berlin ✨
To mark 100 years of Surrealism, the Samurai Museum Berlin presents "Waking Visions – Young Women Artists and Surrealism"—a powerful exploration of how contemporary female artists are reshaping the Surrealist tradition for today’s world.

Curated by Mario Bermek the exhibition highlights the transformative power of dreams, identity, and the subconscious, featuring four outstanding artists: Lucia Berlanga, Eliane Diur, Zohar Fraiman, and Yunyoung Kim. Through painting, ceramics, and textiles, they challenge societal norms, deconstruct gender roles, and weave new narratives between past and present.

By spotlighting the often-overlooked contributions of female Surrealists, Waking Visions not only honors the movement’s legacy but also propels it into the 21st century. Each artist employs Surrealist techniques to question reality, explore cultural identity, and craft deeply personal, thought-provoking works.

Proceeds from artwork sales support Werk9, a Berlin youth cultural center empowering young creatives.

👀 Special highlight: An Art Walk on February 26, offering visitors the chance to meet the artists and gain deeper insights into their visionary worlds.

ART SPOTLIGHT: Pascal Koertel, Der Verborgene Raum, 2024
Pascal Koertel’s art takes you on a journey through surreal realms inspired by mythology, fairy tales, shadow worlds, and Japanese animation. By blending these with his personal experiences, he creates vibrant yet mysterious scenes that invite viewers to explore their own imagination and uncover hidden stories.
Through bold colors and striking contrasts, his works exude a unique energy—both luminous and haunting—while his signature use of natural materials, including the deep blues of lapis lazuli, adds a distinctive touch to his creations.

Koertel’s art is an invitation to dialogue. Initially, his works may seem distant, but as you delve deeper into his dreamlike worlds, they spark your curiosity, challenge your perceptions, and inspire personal interpretations. As the artist himself says: “In my dream world, I wander in search of fleeting shadows of myself to offer viewers impulses for their own stories.”

EXHIBITION TIP: Sacrifice - What is worth more, art or life?, Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel, Berlin
Sacrifice - What is worth more, art or life? A question, we have only recently been faced with and is now the title of the newest exhibition at Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel in Berlin. Featuring compelling works by Svenja Schüffler the exhibition prompts deep reflection on the precarious position of art in the face of climate activism: Like other masterpieces in the Western art canon, Agnus Dei, the sacrificial lamb of God in the Prado in Madrid is constantly exposed to the risk of damage from climate protests.
Does this act follow an initiation rite that stands at the beginning of every new culture and always requires a sacrifice? Why is autonomous art juxtaposed with life in the struggle to ‘save’ the earth? Does this question even jeopardise the practice of artistic self-empowerment as a way of understanding the world and an instance of enlightenment?

Schüffler's approach involves a practice of concealment and revelation, where she appropriates iconic masterpieces like Agnus Dei with their historical framing, immortalising them as a sculptural element of sacrifice in order to vaguely conceal the secret works behind them.

Living and working in Berlin, Schüffler’s pieces reflect a dialogue between past and present, merging historical reverence with contemporary commentary. Don’t miss this chance to engage with her unique vision at Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel, where art meets existential inquiry.

EXHIBITION TIP: Interferenz Bubbles. Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Galerie Wolfgang Jahn, Munich
For the first time Galerie Wolfgang Jahn presents with their latest exhibition "Interference Bubbles" a premiere in the oeuvre of Jiri Georg Dokoupil: This new dimension of Dokoupil's work presents an exquisite blend of his iconic soot and soap bubble paintings alongside a stunning array of new sculptural soap bubble creations.

In this latest series, Dokoupil transcends the two-dimensional canvas, breathing life into his creations with the use of glass—a delicate and transparent medium that mirrors the ephemeral beauty and fragility of soap bubbles. These intricate glass sculptures form a captivating arrangement reminiscent of an abstract bouquet, each bubble displaying its own unique shape, texture, and iridescent coloration. Suspended from metal frameworks Dokoupil’s glass bubble sculptures pay homage to Marcel Duchamp's iconic readymade sculpture of a bottle rack, offering a thought-provoking commentary on the nature of artistic creation and the role of everyday objects in the world of art.

With a curated selection of his iconic soot and soap bubble paintings, Dokoupil unveils an entirely new series of three-dimensional soap bubble sculptures, inviting viewers to explore the dynamic interplay between light, color, and form, offering a captivating journey through his imaginative world. 🫧

ART SPOTLIGHT: Svenja Schüffler - An Experiment under a Concrete Slab, 2016
Step into the realm of seismic uncertainty with Svenja Schüffler's creation, "An Experiment on a Bird." In this artistic journey, the Kakadu (Cockatoo) takes on a profound role, becoming a voice in the face of potential seismic risk: Before the Kakadu becomes a participant in an earthquake experiment, it transcends its role to enounce an early warning. The drawings in this project serve as a captivating fusion of art and seismic science, showcased at the Anthropocene Curriculum of Haus der Kulturen der Welt HKW/Max Planck Institute.

The project goes beyond visual aesthetics; it challenges the very essence of scientific experiments. Paying homage to Robert Boyle's iconic experiment, Schüffler's drawings, especially a miniature inspired by Joseph Wright of Derby's "An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump," question established norms of objective scientific observations.
As the seismic risk experiment unfolds, the Kakadu transforms into more than an experimental subject. His experience becomes a living testament to uncertainties presented as probabilities, weaving a narrative that intertwines science, art, and the delicate concerns of an ecosystem.

By the way: By the end of this month (30 May 2024) there will be the opening of Svenja’s new exhibition “Sacrifice - What is worth more, art or life?” at Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel in Berlin! Don’t miss it and stay tuned for more information!!
