Demand Generation vs. Lead Generation

Often, people think they're doing Demand Generation when they're actually doing Lead Generation. As soon as you stop confusing the two, your marketing will improve dramatically.

Let’s break it down

Lead Generation is a short-term sales-focused method for delivering prospects to your sales team. There is a high volume of generated leads, but the quality is very poor, with close rates no better than cold outbound. An example is E-books downloaded through LinkedIn Sponsored Content or Paid ads on Google, followed by a cadence of outreach by SDRs.

Demand Generation promotes awareness and educates the target market so more people will come to your Sales team to make a purchase. Although lead volumes are lower, the quality is much higher, with significantly better win rates and shorter sales cycles.

For example, showcase a customer's success story, but without a call to action. Host a live Q&A with a market SME with no sales intent.

Marketing teams need to stop being measured, like SDR teams based on "MQL" volume and early-stage funnel metrics that don't matter.
