LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL: and are presenting the collaborative project VERT.

As temperatures rise and biodiversity declines in cities, there’s a need for new solutions in urban design. VERT is an experimental proposition for a modular structure that addresses these issues. The modular red oak timber structure cools the city using climbing plants to create shaded spaces while absorbing CO2.

Experience VERT at Chelsea College of Arts until 14 October.

For 3daysofdesign, American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) presents Three - a new exhibition chronicling the creative journeys of three Nordic designer-makers who have been exploring the design potential of three beautiful but underused U.S. hardwoods.

Anne Brandhøj (Denmark), Anna Maria Øfstedal Eng (Norway) and Pia Högman (Sweden) have been matched at random with either – red oak, maple or cherry – and encouraged to play, experiment and explore. Three is intended to champion the role that these woods can play in the sustainable future of design – while raising awareness as vital components of the forest’s long-term sustainability.

KUMIKO LIGHT OBJECT by Ane Lykke

Designmuseum Danmark commissioned Danish designer Ane Lykke to present Kumiko Light Object at the entrance of the museum as part of the museum's official reopening.

Kumiko Light Object is based on the Japanese woodworking technique Kumiko. The object manifests itself as a fusion between traditional Japanese craftsmanship and a new Nordic perspective. The three-dimensional grid and three parallel layers play with different states - light, shadow and depth. The interaction between the layered three-dimensional grid creates different modes of shadow, depth and reflection. Kumiko Light Object combines the intangible - in this case light, with elements and form structures that generate an ever-changing experience depending on the viewers position in relation to the object.
