Nvidia’s latest AI software turns rough doodles into realistic landscapes

This prototype software shows h7ow AI is going to augment art
SHARE
AI is going to be huge for artists, and the latest demonstration comes from Nvidia, which has built prototype software that turns doodles into realistic landscapes.
Using a type of AI model known as a generative adversarial network (GAN), the software gives users what Nvidia is calling a “smart paint brush.” This means someone can make a very basic outline of a scene (drawing, say, a tree on a hill) before filling in their rough sketch with natural textures like grass, clouds, forests, or rocks.
The results are not quite photorealistic, but they’re impressive all the same.
This software isn’t groundbreaking exactly — researchers have shown off similar tools in the past, including one from Google that turns doodles into clipart — but it is the most polished demonstration of this concept we’ve seen to date. The software generates AI landscapes instantly, and it’s surprisingly intuitive. For example, when a user draws a tree and then a pool of water underneath it, the model adds the tree’s reflection to the pool.

Facebook, Twitter, and Google still aren’t doing enough about disinformation, EU says
Officials released a statement on companies’ progress

Facebook, Twitter, and Google still aren’t doing enough to battle disinformation on their platforms, European Union officials said in a statement released this week.

As part of a plan to fight disinformation on social media, the companies signed on to a voluntary proposal to crack down on the problem last year, which included making plans to increase transparency and fight fake accounts. The European Commission is now publicizing monthly progress reports on the topic, and has released the first, covering January.

“WE NEED TO SEE MORE PROGRESS”
In the statement, the officials criticized the companies’ responses, saying “we need to see more progress.”

“Platforms have not provided enough details showing that new policies and tools are being deployed in a timely manner and with sufficient resources across all EU Member States,” the statement said. “The reports provide too little information on the actual results of the measures already taken.”

Facebook, Twitter, and Google were each singled out for not providing enough information in their reports to officials, who said in today’s statement that they remain “concerned by the situation.” The statement pressed the platforms to move faster ahead of European Parliament elections in May.

Officials in the EU and United States have continued to question what role fake news and foreign interference have played in influencing democratic elections. In an accompanying op-ed in The Guardian this week, EU commissioners said, “if we do not see sufficient long-term progress, we reserve the right to reconsider our policy options – including possible regulation.”

Facebook plans to let Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp users message each other
All apps will support end-to-end encryption
Facebook is working to allow cross-messaging between Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, according to a report in The New York Times this morning.
Each service will continue to operate as a standalone app, but according to the Times, Facebook is rebuilding the underlying infrastructure so that people who might use only one of Facebook’s properties could communicate with others within the company’s ecosystem. All of the apps will support end-to-end encryption as well. Facebook has yet to provide a timeline for when this will happen.
“We want to build the best messaging experiences we can; and people want messaging to be fast, simple, reliable and private,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re working on making more of our messaging products end-to-end encrypted and considering ways to make it easier to reach friends and family across networks. As you would expect, there is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work.”
By allowing these messaging apps to speak to one another across platforms, Facebook is no doubt hoping that it will keep its users more engaged and get them to use this merged system as their primary messaging service. By doing so, the company could also tout higher user engagement to advertisers, bumping up its advertising arm at a time when growth has slowed down.
Facebook has the most users of any other social media platform, and by combining its assets this way, the company could more directly compete with Apple’s iMessage and Google’s messaging services.

Elevate is a concept that has legs... literally

CES typically attracts whacky ideas, especially from automakers that tend to use the electronics show to showcase their most outlandish and unbuildable products. Unfortunately, the 2019 show has been pretty tame by most measures, which is why it’s so refreshing that Hyundai came to Las Vegas with a truly bonkers idea: a “walking car” with real, bendable legs. At last, something to haunt my dreams!
Like some mashup between a Boston Dynamics robot and something you might find stomping across the frozen surface of the planet Hoth, Hyundai’s Elevate vehicle is an automotive concept I can’t recall having seen before. Hyundai says it designed it for first responders who need to access difficult terrain. (Think mountains, forests, or other rock-strewn landscapes that are inaccessible to most terrestrial vehicles.) Electrically powered and modular so it can swap vehicle bodies for a variety of use cases, the South Korean automaker is calling it an “Ultimate Mobility Vehicle.”
A MASHUP BETWEEN A BOSTON DYNAMICS ROBOT AND SOMETHING YOU MIGHT FIND STOMPING ACROSS THE FROZEN SURFACE OF THE PLANET HOTH
Elevate has four “legs,” each with a series of joints, enabling the vehicle to mimic both mammalian and reptilian walking gaits. Here’s how the automaker describes this truly bizarre feature:
The legs also fold up into a stowed drive-mode, where power to the joints is cut, and the use of an integrated passive suspension system maximizes battery efficiency. This allows Elevate to drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle. But no other can climb a five foot wall, step over a five foot gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 15 foot wide track width, all while keeping its body and passengers completely level. Further, the combination of wheeled motion with articulating legs provides a new paradigm of mobility by enabling faster walking speeds, unique dynamic driving postures and torsional control at the end of each leg.
If you’re getting a strong Mars Rover vibe off this thing, that’s on purpose: Hyundai thinks the technology underpinning this vehicle could make it ripe for an interplanetary mission. “By combining the power of robotics with Hyundai’s latest EV technology, Elevate has the ability to take people where no car has been before, and redefine our perception of vehicular freedom,” said David Byron, design manager at Sundberg Ferar.
But right now, they're working at 1/8th scale
Unfortunately, there’s no full-scale prototype to gawk at; instead, we get these videos of a not-to-scale model performing its featured leg stretches as well as some flashy computer graphics of how this thing will look in its final form.
In addition to emergency services, Hyundai says its concept could be ideal as a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. Imagine opening your front door to find this thing waiting right outside. Not at all creepy!

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing

UK police have arrested two individuals in connection with flight disruptions at London Gatwick Airport. The pair, a 47-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were arrested late on Friday, according to the Sussex Police.

Air traffic at Gatwick, England’s second largest airport, was disrupted when a drone was spotted flying in the area on Wednesday, prompting the airport to suspend flights through Friday. Flights were diverted to other airports, and authorities ended up bringing in the British Army, which media reports say set up an Israeli-built drone defense system called a “Drone Dome,” designed to intercept the device’s radio signals. Flights resumed at the airport on Friday.

Sussex Police did not identify the individuals, other than to say that they were being held on “suspicion of disrupting services of civil aviation aerodrome to endanger or likely to endanger safety of operations or persons,” and that the investigation was ongoing. According to The Guardian, authorities aren’t investigating the incident as a terrorism incident, but say that “an environmental protest was a possibility.”

As I always say, there is no good in a business for the individual companies, but being a part of a strong and integrated companies team working as one ... that automatically contributes to increasing the business ratio and thus the expected profits.

The road to 5G: the biggest news on next-gen mobile networks
SHARE
Carriers around the world are preparing to move on from 4G LTE to 5G, the next era of mobile networking that promises ultra-fast data speeds and low latency between device and network. Consumers in the US can expect to start seeing 5G networks light up in 2019. All four major providers — Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint — have promised to make 5G a reality in the new year. Even before those networks are switched on, smartphones from Samsung, LG, and other 5G-capable devices have already been announced.
The evolution and standardization of 5G has been a long process, but the technology could lead to major advancements in numerous areas like the smart home, media consumption, augmented reality, self-driving cars, telemedicine, and more.
