WNBA players have never had the luxury of “just playing basketball.”

Support the players. Watch the games. Buy the merch. But don’t stop there. Support the communities at the centre of these conversations, too.

Wherever your favourite WNBA team is based, find the organizations in that community doing the same.

Learning another language is about more than communication. It’s curiosity, humility, cultural understanding, and recognizing that your language isn’t inherently more important than someone else’s.

We’re so accustomed to English being the global default that there’s often little incentive to learn anything else. When the rest of the world accommodates you, it becomes easy to expect everyone else to speak your language.

And this should be obvious, but when I say “English,” I mean dominant standardized American and British English, particularly the forms spread through colonialism. I’m not referring to every English-based vernacular, dialect or creole.

For many of us, learning a language can also mean reclaiming ancestral languages stripped from us through colonization. It’s not just communication. Its connection, reclamation, and resistance.
