Whether you’re staying with Cómpeta Escapes or simply visiting our beautiful village, we’ve put together some of our favourite local tips to help you make the very most of Feria.
From 23rd–26th July, Cómpeta comes alive with music, traditions and celebrations. Here’s what to expect…
🚕 Travelling to or from Málaga Airport?
Book your taxi well in advance. It’s one of the busiest weekends of the summer and availability becomes limited.
🚗 Parking
The village gets very busy, so don’t be surprised if you need to park on the outskirts and enjoy a short walk into the centre.
🍽️ Planning to eat out?
Book ahead. Restaurants, especially around Plaza Almijara, are often fully booked well before the event.
🎤 Thursday – Opening Night
The Feria officially begins with music, entertainment and speeches in Plaza Almijara. It’s also the evening when the Feria Queen is traditionally crowned, ready to lead Sunday’s Romería.
🏍️🐎 Friday – Carrera de Cintas
One of Cómpeta’s best-loved traditions. Children on bicycles, followed by horse riders and motorcyclists, attempt to spear tiny rings hanging from colourful ribbons. It’s a wonderful spectacle and well worth watching.
🫧 Saturday – Foam Party & Afternoon DJ
Bring a change of clothes and a towel if you’re planning to join in! You’ll almost certainly end up soaked (and probably a little sticky too!), but that’s all part of the fun.
The Foam Party flows straight into the afternoon DJ session in Plaza Almijara, in the shadow of the church. It always attracts a fantastic crowd and is one of the highlights of the Feria weekend.
🐂🐴 Sunday – La Romería
One of our favourite days of the Feria.
Led by the Feria Queen, locals dressed in beautiful traditional Andalusian costume, together with horses, oxen and decorated carts, parade through the village. You can watch from one spot or follow part—or all—of the route as it winds through Cómpeta at a relaxed pace.
If you find the crowds a little overwhelming, head upstairs to Adriano’s Cocktail Bar. Their balcony is a wonderful place to enjoy a drink while watching the Romería pass by below.
🥘 Free Paella
While you’re in the square, don’t miss the complimentary paella and drink served around lunchtime on Sunday. It gets busy, so expect queues, and remember your hat, sunscreen and plenty of water while you wait.
🎡 The Funfair
The main funfair is in the lower car park, where you’ll find the bigger rides, bumper cars and all the classic Feria atmosphere.
For younger children, there’s also a smaller funfair in the upper car park, making it perfect for families.
And while you’re there… don’t forget to treat yourself to a bag of freshly made churros—it’s all part of the Feria experience! 😋
If you’re still in the village on Monday, the fairground often remains open and the rides are traditionally offered at reduced prices.
🎭 Throughout the weekend
Look out for live entertainment across the village, from traditional flamenco to spectacular big stage dance and live performances. Wherever you wander, there’s always something happening.
💧 Stay hydrated
July temperatures are often well into the 30s. Enjoy the celebrations, enjoy a drink or two, but don’t forget to keep the water flowing as well!
😴 Do Feria like a local…
Feria isn’t a sprint—it’s a marathon! 😄 Locals often enjoy an afternoon siesta before heading back out for another evening of music, dancing and celebrations that continue well into the early hours.
💤 Staying with Cómpeta Escapes?
Feria is wonderfully lively and the village can be noisy into the early hours. Simply close the windows, switch on the air conditioning and you’ll soon be sleeping comfortably.
