McSwell started an exciting new project of transforming a 290 m² cortijo (rural building in the southern part of Spain), into a fully liveable home while keeping the additional 208 m2 for a horse stable. What was once used as a country side restaurant is about to be reimagined into something contemporary, while respecting its historical character.

Collaborating closely with the client, we are currently in the conceptual design phase, exploring different layout options and rethinking how the space can flow, function, and feel. It’s a unique challenge with so much potential, working with the existing structure and stepping on any challenges that come across the way (including that poor snail)!

Join us on our journey, from the design phase, technical detailing and material selections to the building phase and collaboration with the construction team in order to give a new life to this old building. Ironically, 2 horses have just been born here this past month!

✨ Finished Project → Music Studio 🎶

This project started off as a prefabricated modern barn house. Instead of keeping the traditional rooms, we opened the floor plan and customized the spaces. The new program included a 33 m2 sound proof recording studio. A bathroom/changing room connects to the studio and is designed in dark tiles and mood lighting to contrast the lighter, airy high ceiling studio space. An acoustical wall with a large glass window visually connects the two main spaces of the building while maintaining the isolation needed for clean vocal and instrument recordings.

On the opposite side of the partition wall, a 72 m² multi-purpose performance area doubles as a lounge and game room, finished with a full-service bar. Both zones remain linked by an interior door and a shared outdoor patio, creating connection and flexibility even when recording sessions are underway. Each area contains a custom circular metal fireplace (one is ceiling hung) to keep the space comfortable in winter.

What began as a prefab shell has been converted into a multi-purpose environment for recording and creating music while entertaining and having fun along the way! We are grateful to have had this opportunity to work with amazing clients and construction team that pulled the weight to fix any issues with the prefab structure.

Count down to move-in day. 🏡✨We are at the final push to finish this house renovation for my clients who are currently renting and anxious to move in at the end of the month.

Behind the scenes, as you can see, our construction team is working hard, coordinating specialists, fine-tuning details, and pushing forward to make sure everything is in place. Pressure is on but our goal remains the same: to hand over a home that’s not just on time, but meets all expectations.

Thank you for your trust in us, we are excited to see you walk through your “wedge free” front door and start a new life in Conil. 🔑

After a long winter of extreme weather, who is ready to take an outdoor shower in the sun?! ☀️

There’s something about the curved walls wrapping around you as you enter that makes it feel private, sculptural, and completely connected to the outdoors at the same time. Being in your natural state, water falling on your head with the sky above…bring on summer!

Over the long "Día de Andalucía" weekend, I was fortunate to collaborate with two talented creatives to produce this video showcasing our home and McSwell Studio, located in the Cádiz Region of Spain.✨

It’s hard to believe that just 7 years ago we made the move here, after having purchased the plot several years earlier during a home exchange trip, when we were living on the other side of Andalusia (Cabo de Gata). We relocated across the Region, established a new life for our family, started to make connections and designed the home we envisioned for the price we wanted to spend.

The design challenge was to build 236m2 on a 350m2 plot of land so we stacked the massing from a broader base, with the levels progressively narrowing as they ascend. The largest massing and private space is located underground, flanked by two large English patios on parallel sides and an operable skylight that ensures privacy, stable temperatures, and natural light throughout. The layout is optimized to the sun’s orientation and the natural ventilation gives us comfort and energy efficiency year-round.

The main level consists of an open-plan layout to create a spacious feel, including a double-height kitchen area, where socializing often revolves around food. Built-in storage and seating, along with outdoor balconies, extend the living areas to embrace indoor/outdoor living spaces. The entire upstairs is used as our office, and a flexible conference room or guest bedroom en suite.

The contemporary, minimalist styling reflects our company brand, which mixes functionality, authenticity, and our cultural references of California vibes and Cadiz soul. ✨

Satire meets soul in the streets of Cádiz ✨🎭
Every year, during the legendary Carnaval de Cádiz, the city transforms into a living stage and at the heart of it all are the unforgettable chirigotas.
These witty, musical street performances blend humor, sharp social commentary, and deep creativity. Dressed in elaborate, often outrageous costumes, groups take on politics, pop culture, and everyday life with lyrics that are as clever as they are catchy.
The magic unfolds across plazas and corners of the Old Town, and on the grand stage of the Carnaval de Cádiz, but the true spirit lives in the spontaneous street performances where locals and visitors gather, laugh, and sing along.
If you’ve never experienced Cádiz during carnaval season, add it to your to do list. And if you have… you already know there’s nothing quite like it. 💛🎶

PROCESS. 📐When it comes to finding plans for houses, unless recently built, Spanish properties usually fall short of architectural sets so drawing them is essential for renovation work. When measuring this existing apartment built in 1960, even though I have a dual laser tape measure, I prefer to verify my measurements the old school way, bending around the spaces with the metal rollup.

I begin by reviewing information listed on the public land registry “catastro” which displays the real estate property and dimensions of the building. By finding fixed reference points such as structural walls or columns, I measure all the spaces room by room documenting everything in a notebook.

This property had all kinds of irregular angles so I ended up having to double check the dimensions after drawing it in a CAD program. With this accurate drawing, I start designing new layouts in the existing space. Building a 3-D model helps give my clients a better vision for the space and is a strong tool for creating material renderings.

What is going on with the months of rain that we have been having in western Andalusia?! Anyone experiencing black mold forming on your homes roof and/or walls? The humidity creeping in is through capillary moisture and unfortunately vinegar won’t fix it. 💧🧱

When ground moisture rises through porous materials (brick, stone, mortar), it deteriorates the structure, brings salts, erodes windows, damages plaster, and creates unhealthy indoor air.

How to stop capillary moisture:

✔️ Remove existing plaster or rendering to expose the original wall
✔️ Drill holes and inject an expanding gel to create a a damp-proof barrier
✔️ Use waterproofing lime mortar layer before applying new plaster (free of VOCs)
The result? Dry walls, healthier air, and longer-lasting homes.

AI has directly shaken up our small business so we have had to rethink not only how we work, but also the services we offer, and the results have been constantly evolving. ✨

With the right AI design tools, what used to take hours (or days) to visualize for clients can now happen much faster. Starting with a simple photo of the existing space, we can explore interior design ideas, swap specific furniture, lighting and finishes, and bring concepts to life inside their existing environment.

Nano Banana + Photoshop has been a game changer for testing specific pieces with the right prompts and a little image-tool tweaking. And while we’re still figuring out the video side of things (as you can see in this first attempt), the possibilities can be unpredictable and quite fun.
