In Calle de Calderes stands the Lleona of Girona, a sculpture atop a Romanesque-style column dating from the 12th century. Over time, kissing and touching the Lleona’s ass has become a propitiatory gesture for people entering or leaving Girona. As a popular saying goes:
He is not a good citizen of Girona who has not kissed the Lleona’s ass.

Rispa is a craft beer brand born and brewed in Girona, Catalonia, deeply connected to the city’s stories, myths, and identity.

The beer is produced inside Hotel Palau Fugit, an 18th-century palace and member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

Using local ingredients, the hotel’s brewmaster crafts each recipe in the Rispa laboratory, located just across from Palau Fugit.

The project was developed by the agency Firma who commissioned me to create a series of 10 original illustrations, one for each beer style (Rice Beer, Pilsner, Blanche, Tripel, American IPA, Fruited Berliner Weisse, Marzen, Session IPA, Imperial Stout).

Each illustration interprets a myth or legend from Girona, transforming figures from local folklore into the icons of the beer labels.

Through an evocative and symbolic illustrative language, legends take shape and become identity: each bottle is not just a beer, but a story.

In the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants there is a capital depicting the figure of a mermaid, though not the familiar one from popular imagery. This mermaid is peculiar and enigmatic: she has two tails, is very thin with pronounced ribs, long hair, stands upon the water, and holds the ends of her two tails in her hands, which twist upwards from her body.

Sant Narcís, travelling with Sant Feliu, arrived in the city of Augsburg, where they met a pagan woman named Afra who offered them shelter in her home. The next day, the prefect of Augsburg discovered the presence of Christians and condemned Afra to be burned at the stake. In 1344, the people of Girona dedicated a shrine to her near Ginestar in her honour.

Gerió is the greatest gegant of Catalonia, a mythological giant with three heads and six arms, each with its own personality. The Warrior, with shield and spear, who killed the beautiful Pyrenees. The Cowherd, with a shepherd’s crook and a raised fist, from whom Hercules stole the oxen. The Architect, with a mason’s trowel and drafting compass, the founder of Girona.

In the district of Mercadal there once stood a convent of dissolute nuns, except for one novice with a true vocation, who was locked away in a cell beneath the floor. After many years, darkness and humidity transformed her into a crocodile with butterfly wings. On foggy full-moon nights, before sunrise, her spectre can be seen floating on the waters of the river Onyar.

A devilish witch had the habit of throwing stones at the Cathedral of Girona. One day, a divine curse turned her into stone and placed her at the highest point of the cathedral, so that no more curses could come from her mouth, only clean water falling from the clouds. A popular song says:
If you throw stones, you will throw stones, and you will become a stone.

In antiquity, subterranean telluric forces were associated with dragons or serpents. The Druids called them vouivres, a word meaning “viper.” The intersection of two or more vouivres was believed to create places of healing or power. Over time, churches were built upon these sites. Inside the Cathedral of Girona, several references to the dragon can still be found.

During the Middle Ages, in 1286, the French king's army besieged the city of Girona by storming the church of Sant Feliu. The troops mercilessly desecrated the tomb of Sant Narcís — the protector of the city — , but miraculously giant flies began to emerge from the saint's body, furiously stinging the French soldiers and their horses until they killed them.

Carrer del Llop takes its name from a house in the street that once bore a sculpted lintel above its doorway depicting a wolf. Legend says that in this place, while a procession was passing by, a wolf suddenly appeared and devoured a young schoolboy carrying the processional cross. Curiously, the ancient people of Girona once identified wolves with lions.

In 1348, Girona was struck by a terrible plague, especially in Carrer de l’Argenteria, forcing the inhabitants to live in quarantine. El Tarlà, a character disguised as a juggler, distracted adults and children alike with his acrobatics, performing on a bar hung between the balconies of the street, bringing a smile to a particularly dark moment in the city.
