Six women inside 2:23 in Amsterdam, and the top two both beat the course record.

Buze Diriba won it in 2:16:12, going under Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s 2:16:52 from 2024 and taking three and a half minutes off her own best in the space of a year. Defending champion Aynalem Desta was second in 2:17:06, also inside the old mark, and former Amsterdam winner Meseret Belete took third in 2:18:05.

Ethiopia filled the first six places. Tiringo Mulu, Mestawut Fikir and Girmawit Gebrzihair followed the podium home, before Rabecca Chepkwemoi broke the run for Kenya in seventh.

Behind them, Bahrain, Israel and Ethiopia again inside 2:25. Amsterdam used to be a race where one woman ran fast and the rest strung out. Not any more.

Eight men under 2:05 in Amsterdam. Not one of them was the favourite.

Lemi Berhanu took it in 2:03:33, three seconds off the course record, with Nicholas Kipkorir six seconds back in 2:03:39 and Patrick Mosin third in 2:03:58. Three men inside 2:04 on a wet morning in the Netherlands.

Behind them the field simply refused to break. Kalipus Lomwai 2:04:08, Sila Kiptoo 2:04:12, Justus Kangogo 2:04:24, Jonathan Korir 2:04:52, Isaia Lasoi 2:04:57. Eighth place ran quicker than any winner of this race before 2023.

Kenya took seven of the top eight places and none of the wins. Japan’s Yohei Ikeda rounded out the depth in ninth.

And the names everyone came to watch, the defending champion and the three quickest men on paper, are nowhere on this list.

Jonathan Korir storms to the finish of the Amsterdam Marathon to claim 7th place.

Buze Diriba said she would run 2:16 in Amsterdam. She has run 2:16:10.

A year ago in Frankfurt she won in 2:19:34, fighting headwinds from the gun after her pacemaker dropped out with 10km left. Afterwards she said that without the wind it would have been a 2:16, and that 2:16 was the plan for her next marathon. Twelve months later, to the week, she has delivered it almost to the second.

The progression behind that is the real story. 2:23:11 in Toronto in 2023. 2:20:22 in Chicago in 2024. 2:19:34 in Frankfurt last October. Now 2:16:10, taking three and a half minutes off her best in a year, at 32.

It also puts her inside Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s course record of 2:16:52, with defending champion Aynalem Desta in the field.

“I know I shall have to run under 2:15 to reach world class,” she said last year. She is very nearly there.

Lemi Berhanu has won the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:03:33, and the number behind it matters 🏆

He arrived with a personal best of 2:04:33, only the fourth quickest in the field. He leaves having taken a full minute off it, and finishing three seconds outside Geofry Kipchumba’s course record from last year, with Kipchumba himself in the race defending the title.

Berhanu is not new to this. He won Boston in 2016 as a 21-year-old, then spent a decade building a career around Mumbai and Prague rather than the biggest fields. Ten years on from that first major, at an age when most marathoners are drifting backwards, he has run the fastest race of his life.

Amsterdam keeps producing times like this. Flat, fast, and increasingly where personal bests go to happen.

Five women, five editions, and one performance that still stands apart.

Ruth Croft takes the 2026 title in 27:13:23, on the longest Diagonale ever run at 180.8km and 10,200m of climbing. Blandine L’Hirondel won in 2025 in 27:26:09, finishing eighth overall. Manon Bohard’s 2024 victory came in 31:49:55 on a brutal edition. Katie Schide took 2023 in 27:31:08, thirteenth across the whole field.

Then there’s Courtney Dauwalter in 2022. She finished in 24:37:47 and came fourth overall, beaten by three men and nobody else. A year later she took Western States, Hardrock and UTMB in a single summer.

Two Americans, two French, and now a New Zealander. The Diagonale is one of the few majors where the women’s race has stayed genuinely international.
