What SMMs do on an afternoon off…

Hey, it was the yesterday and this ‘cheese and goat’ fair was taking place, so off we went on a little road trip.

Ahhhh don't you just love it when another SMM takes it upon themselves to write to your client pages - yes, the ones you run - to tell your client (you) that they're a social media manager and have 'had an opening come up on their books'/noticed that you don't post regularly'/'not taking full advantage of your social media platforms'...(insert introduction here)? No? Me either.

I present to you Exhibit A, sent today to one of the pages I run; set up and managed entirely by me, and posted to on an almost-daily basis - as well as being very active in local forums. I've covered the names of the other clients he's name dropped to save his blushes.

I have never, and I mean never, approached a business as a 'cold call' through their social media pages, or by email, to effectively (even if they don't think that's what they're doing) put down the work of the existing media manager in an effort to poach the job from them - but it's happened to me more times than I can count since I started Willow.

You may think this is someone being proactive and go-getting. I find it arrogant and quite insulting - not to mention lazy. Saying something along the lines of "I've just stumbled across your pages/restaurant/cafe (what a fib!) and I noticed that you don't have much of an online presence"...is the kind of arrogance that's borne from ignorance - because more often than not they've not bothered to even look at the page.

All round, it's a very poor show - and I've told more than one chancer this over the years. It is NOT the way to garner new clients for your books.

For the record, I've got 100% of my business through word of mouth, or people responding to my promotional posts. Most of it has been through personal recommendations - and that's exactly how it should be.

If you've a lover of all things Italian with something of a sweet tooth, and you happen to be in the Wallington (just outside of SE London) area, then you need to put a trip to Caffé Federico on your 'to do' list!

As well as a wonderful selection of fresh sandwiches made to order, brunches, lunches and special pasta dishes, Wallington's newest Italian offering is a sweet lover's dream!

From croissants to cannoli, Federico has a gorgeous (not to mention colourful!) display of cakes and pastries to choose from every day from their counter - including these 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦 ('little boats') - crisp pastry shells piped with a variety of delizioso fillings.

All the better to go with your cappuccino or morning espresso, don't you think?! ☕ 🧁

Oh we do love an arancino or three here at Willow! If you're lucky enough to be anywhere near Caffé Federico why not go and try them for yourself...and become an arancini lover too!

Aaaaaaarancini! What do you know about these delectable and delizioso snacks - one of our own personal favourites?!

Enjoyed principally as a street food but now found in many places as one of many 𝘤𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪 (Italian snacks enjoyed with drinks), arancini originated in Sicily - thanks to its Arabic influence many centuries ago - supposedly as a fantastico way to use up any left over risotto, but these days, they are just as likely to be produced in their own right.

Traditionally stuffed with a meat ragù and mozzarella, it's even possible to find arancini with all kinds of fillings if you know where to look, and in different sizes, too.

We're paired our large classic 𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘰 with a tomato and burrata sauce, to make a wonderful small plate for lunch, or as a snack.

Or, you can always do as we do, and enjoy it as an aperitivo washed down with a spritz or two.

Caffé Federico is the newest addition to the streets of Wallington in Surrey - just a few miles from the suburbs of South East London, but with its very own village-y feel.

Serving brunch, lunch, (and plenty more besides!) the ethos at Federico is to bring honest, homemade Italian food -with homemade pasta dishes a speciality -to Wallington - and will also be offering the perfect spot to wind down after work with an early evening offering of 𝘈𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘰 and 𝘊𝘪𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪.

The cafe opened just over a week ago and is already enjoying a warm welcome from locals, and some fantastic feedback, which has made for a very encouraging start.

Open every day apart from Mondays for now, owner Michael hopes that with Federico, he'll be bringing something a little different to the pavements of Wallington - as well as having a chance to showcase his cheffing ability, for which he well renowned in his previous restaurant in Penge, south-east London.

Willow will be helping with all of the social media marketing and copywriting aspects of Caffé Federico, effective immediately, including the creation (and growth!) of pages on the main social media platforms.

Alora..I foresee an Aperol Spritz or two in the future.

It’s not every day that a client (who has also become a friend!) gifts you with something gorgeous ‘just because’, and to say thank you - but when they do, it’ certainly makes for a good one!

I’ve long hankered after having my own BIBA bag and now, I’ve got one! What a lovely and genuine surprise.

It can get a bit lonely sometimes being self-employed, especially when you’re working as a one-woman marketing team, so a little appreciation really can go a long way.

I feel seen, as they say - but all in the best possible way! 👜🫶🏾
