A well-shaped, filled and sanded foam sculpture is only half the job. The other half is decided at the paint stage. And there’s one step almost no one notices, but it’s what decides whether the piece holds up or not: the primer.

Foam isn’t an easy material to paint. It’s porous, sensitive to certain solvents and very uneven when it comes to absorbing paint. Put colour straight onto it and you get a blotchy surface, different sheens across the piece and a fragile layer that marks with the lightest touch.

That’s why, before any colour goes on, we build up layers of a specific primer: it seals the surface, evens out absorption, protects the foam from the solvents in the paint, and creates a base where colour behaves like on any other solid material. Each layer is sanded, checked and prepared for the next.

By the time we’re ready to paint, foam no longer behaves like foam. It’s a uniform, resistant surface, ready to take matte, satin or gloss finishes with the same result you’d get on wood or metal.

Part two with Paloma. This time we move on to the trickier cuts: curves, bevels, large pieces, and how to leave the surface ready for finishing.

When you master polystyrene cutting, the piece comes out of the workshop almost resolved: less sanding, fewer adjustments, fewer surprises during install.

If you missed part one, scroll back to our feed.

Atento.

Polystyrene is a king material in production: lightweight, versatile, perfect for volume. But cutting it well takes some craft.

Paloma, from the B!G workshop, kicks off the series showing the first ways to cut polystyrene depending on the finish you need: hot knife for clean cuts, saw for bigger runs, and tricks to keep the material from chipping.

Next up: the more technical cuts. Stay tuned.

Sanding hours: the quiet work that makes a project look flawless

In the workshop, some tasks look impressive at a glance: a CNC cutting, a print coming off the plotter, a build clicking together for the first time. And then there’s sanding.

It’s not spectacular. It’s hours on your feet, switching grits, checking by touch and against the light, hunting for the imperfection that’s still there. And starting over when it shows up.

But it’s what separates a decent build from one that looks flawless. A badly sanded surface shows the moment paint hits it, the light comes on, or someone runs their hand over it.

That’s why we don’t skip it. We work through the grits step by step, clean between passes, check under different lights, and don’t call a piece finished until there’s no joint, pore or tool mark left.

When a client sees the finished project and thinks it looks flawless, what they’re really seeing, without knowing it, is those hours of sanding.

Frames: the invisible base of every structure

Behind every stand, set or installation you see finished, there’s something that almost never makes it into the photo: the frames.

They’re the structure that holds everything else. The piece that decides whether a build stands up, fits together and travels well. Without a solid frame, no finish is worth much.

In the workshop we work the wood with intent: we choose the material based on the weight it has to hold, how it’s going to be used, and how many times it will travel. We cut, assemble and reinforce knowing that many of these pieces will be set up and taken down dozens of times.

And when a project ends, they don’t end up in the bin. Frames get cleaned, labelled and stored, ready to come out again for the next build. Less waste, more craft, and a solid base to build the next thing on.

What you don’t see is cared for too. 🔨

Smooth finish on wood: the invisible step that decides how the paint looks

A piece can be perfectly cut, assembled and installed, and still look off if the finish isn’t dialled in. Paint doesn’t forgive. Any exposed grain, visible joint or small flaw in the wood shows up more once the piece is painted than when it’s raw.

That’s why, before painting, we spend real time preparing the surface. Some pieces just need a proper sanding sequence, moving up through grits until your hand can’t feel a single flaw. Others need filler paste to cover joints, screw heads or areas with strong grain. It dries, we sand again, and repeat as many times as needed.

By the time we’re ready to paint, the surface is prepped so the colour can just do its job: catch the light evenly and let the piece read clean.

The finish is invisible, but you always feel it.

Kipling stand. When foam stops being filler and becomes part of the build.

For the Kipling stand we needed volume, curved shapes and a presence you could spot from across the fair, without a structure that weighed a ton or took days to install. That’s where foam (porex) comes in.

Foam is light, cuts with precision and lets us build shapes that would be impossible (or way too heavy) in wood. But integrating it properly into a stand isn’t just about cutting: there’s a whole process behind it.

First we shape it from the render, using hot wire or CNC depending on the piece. Then comes the filler, layer by layer, until the surface no longer looks like foam. It gets sanded until your hand can’t find a single flaw. And it’s painted with finishes made to survive transport, install and public interaction.

The result is a piece that looks solid, weighs a fraction of what it seems, and fits seamlessly with the wooden structure and the rest of the stand’s materials.

The Vaseline stand for in place. Clean structure, clear branding and product well laid out. That’s how we wrap a project where we took care of every stage, from the first render to the final on-site tweak.

Building a stand is easy. Building one that works is what matters.

Si has visto un stand bien resuelto, probablemente has visto dibond sin saberlo.

If you’ve seen a well-resolved stand, you’ve probably seen dibond without knowing it.

Dibond is a composite panel (two aluminium skins with a polyethylene core) that combines rigidity, lightness and a clean finish. We use it especially for ephemeral structures: stands, counters, graphic panels, POSM fronts and brand zones at events. It handles transport, machines well, takes vinyl and gets reused between installs.
