In Somaliland, something rare is taking shape: the quiet beginnings of a new, sustainable society. It’s a story of return, renewal – and an unexpected Finnish connection.
Somaliland’s new president, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdulla, carries not only the hopes of a fragile nation but also Finnish citizenship. And he’s not alone. Abdihakim Yasin and Mohamed-Madar Jamac, Somalis who lived for years in Finland, have returned with a mission: to launch an initiative that brings skilled people, ideas, and resources back to the country.
This is not just a project. It’s a shared commitment and movement.
Though still in its early days, the initiative is already gaining momentum. The idea is simple and powerful: what if diaspora communities didn’t just send remittances — but returned with experience, networks, and the will to build something new? Just as importantly, it seeks to connect to the land’s existing talents and skills — fostering collaboration between returnees and those who never left.
Måndag is proud to support this effort, helping to design a sustainable operating model and connect key partners across sectors. We believe in the strength of collaboration — between businesses, civil society, and government — to create real and lasting change.
At a time when society is often something to preserve, Somaliland reminds us: it can still be something to build. Together.
