Suunto turns 90 this year, and its archive is coming home to Finland for Helsinki Design Week. Curated by Werneri Vanhanen and Garbadura, From Depths to Heights brings together nine decades of Suunto instruments, outdoor culture, Finnish design, and the kind of product history that still feels current today. Alongside the objects, the exhibition features photos, product catalogues, campaign material, historical documents, and Finnish designer furniture, celebrating Suunto’s place between sport, design, tech, and everyday outdoor life.
The exhibition starts with function. Precision compasses built for harsh Nordic conditions. Dive instruments. Mountain watches. GPS wearables. The Vector. Objects made for people moving through water, snow, forests, altitude, weather, and everything in between.
A compass is not just a compass when it has been used to move through unknown terrain. A watch is not just a watch when it has sat on someone’s wrist in conditions where direction, weather, and timing actually matter.
After 90 years, Suunto’s celebrating why certain objects keep their meaning long after their original functional moment has passed.
From Depths to Heights is open in Helsinki on Thursday 3.9. from 13–18 and Friday 4.9. from 13–19 at Kasino Vintage & 2nd hand, Katariinankatu 1.
