"frivolous Lemminkäinen sought his way towards the swan song. Towards the water of the proud bird, on the black Tuoni river deep in the abyss of the underworld."

I have no clue why, but this element from stories in Kalevala capture me so much! Swans are ordinarily in a lot of different cultures considered a majestic and almost a sort of "pure" animal. Even in some sources from finnish folklore we can read how the swan was a pure animal that you weren't supposed to either eat or kill because of it's sacredness. Yet here we find a swan swimming in the water between the land of the living and the dead. This fascinates me to no end! There isn't much known about thus perticular swan. All we can do today is to speculate!

"Dödeling said to Väinämöinen "You are such a fool, Väinämöinen. To come to the abode of the dead while you are still alive". She led him to a dark glade where the matriarch of the underworld, Tuonetar, stood by a huge cauldron. She held out a goblet to the old seer. Worms crawled around the edges of the cup and dead things lay at the bottom. "I know better than to drink the beer of death! I am not here to empty goblets with Tuoni!". Tuonetar's smile faded and she asked "Then why are you here, you old man?".

"Surt far från söder
med svedande lågor,
stridsgudars sol
på svärdet skimrar,
Bergen brakar,
fram bryter häxor,
män trampar Hels väg,
och himlen rämnar."
- Gyljfaginning, vers 4.

Translated:
Surt comes from the south
with burning flames,
sun of battle gods
shimmers on the sword,
The mountains crash,
forth breaks witches,
men tread Hel's trail,
and the sky is falling.

This is my pretty different take on the fire giant Surt. I've had this idea in my head for such a long time, and I'm so happy to finally have it down on paper! I hope you guys like it!

The runes say:
"Nu drog de ur skidan
skärande järnet,
eggvass glaven
till Hels glädje,
drap själve [brodern],
lät unge svennen
segna till jorden.:
- Hamðismál, Stanza 16

It's about three brothers traveling together to avenge their fallen sister. On their journey they got into a fight and two of them killed the third. And the text say that "They killed their brother, to the joy of Hel".

I've always loved and gotten fascinated by the "bad guys" in all sort of tales. I don't know exactly what it is, but they fascinate me! Hope you guys like.my first rendition of Hel!

Ukko, lord of the sky, grasped with his palms, rubbed and at the same time grasped his left knee and rubbed. From this were produced three maidens, mothers of the red ore, the first mothers of the iron family.

Black was the milk of the first, she who was the oldest of them, white milk flowed from the second, who was the middle maiden, red milk spurted from the last, youngest of the trio of sisters.

From the black milk arose malleable wrought iron for the forge, but the white was transformed into the precious steel; the red milk became brittle pig iron bars.

Väinämöinen had traveled far and wide to find the words of power he did not yet know. In the realm of the dead, Touni, he had traveled, through Kaleva and even the cold Pohjola. But there was only one who knew the most ancient words of power. The ancient and powerful giant Vipunen.

Vipunen wasn't going to give away his secrets so easily. He swallowed old Väinämöinen whole, but the old man was wise and mighty. In the belly of the great giant, old Väinämöinen transformed into fire. Vipunen was tormented by the flames inside him. "What can I do to escape the pain?" wondered the giant. "Teach me your words of power, and I will let you live!".

The defeated giant cursed Väinämöinen with every imaginable and unimaginable profanity. Some so old that no one but Vipunen knew them. But in the end the giant had no choice. He taught Väinämöinen the words of power he knew. Väinämöinen was satisfied.

The young rune singer, Joukahainen, demanded, "if my wisdom is not good enough for you, then let us do battle instead!". The old Vänämöinen answered, "I will not cross swords with the likes of you, you wretch!". Enraged Joukahainen spat out the worst insult he could think of: "Curse you! I will turn you into a pig and push you into a pile of manure!".
Väinämöinen was furious. The Great shaman began to intone magic words, and the land rumbled, rocky ledges crumbled and mountains trembled with the power of his spells. [...] Joukahainen himself sank into a bog right up to his armpits, and could not even move his feet! He admitted to himself that he had met his superior. "Let me go, Väinämöinen, I will give you whatever you want," begged Joukahainen. "What will you give me?" the old rune singer asked.
