As we commemorate Ratu Sukuna Day, we reflect not only on the life of Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna, but also on the deeper meaning of leadership itself.
True leadership is not measured only by titles, position or public recognition. It is measured by service. It is measured by the courage to think beyond one’s own time. It is measured by the ability to honour tradition while preparing a nation for the future.
Ratu Sukuna’s legacy reminds us that progress does not require us to forget who we are. Instead, real progress asks us to stand firmly in our identity, respect the wisdom of our ancestors, and still have the vision to shape a better tomorrow.
In today’s Fiji, his story continues to speak to all of us. It reminds us that unity is not sameness. Unity is the willingness to move forward together, with respect for our diverse communities, our shared history, and our collective responsibility to the next generation.
May this day be more than remembrance.
May it be a moment of reflection.
A reflection on service over self.
Dignity over division.
Wisdom over noise.
And shared purpose over individual ambition.
As we remember Ratu Sir Josefa Lalabalavu Vanayaliyali Sukuna, may we continue building a Fiji that moves forward together, with respect, courage and shared purpose.
