Merzouga, The Sahara
A real pinch me moment.
There was something quite amazing about standing on a sand dune here before dawn, just waiting for the light. It was the absolute quietness of the desert waking up that really stayed with me. I watched the deep orange colours slowly come alive as the hazy sun hit the ridges, revealing all the shapes and undulations of the dunes. Then, right on cue, these camel trains passed right in front of us. Going out into the desert that early in the morning was just fabulous.

The Mellah in Marrakech has a different energy to the main souks. It’s the old Jewish quarter, a bit more functional and less about the “show” for visitors, which makes it perfect for observing the steady hum of local life. This was a quieter area with narrow alleyways and a lot of ochre and blue!

We wandered through the spice market just watching these interactions, avoiding the odd speeding motorbike delivery and donkey and cart!
I enjoyed the subtlety of trying to capture these candid moments, no posing or staging, just the natural rhythm of daily life.

Deep in the backstreets of Marrakech, well away from the usual tourist loops, we found this workshop. It was a chance encounter with a Moroccan artisan to take some environmental portraits during a walking tour through a neighbourhood where daily life carries on at its own steady pace.

This welder was kind enough to let us stay for a few moments as he worked. His small space was a maze of metal scraps, tools and the intricate lanterns the city is known for. I liked the contrast between the dark workshop behind and the sudden, brilliant blue flare of his torch that lit up his face as he worked. I felt his face and eyes conveyed patience and kindness.
There is a quiet, rhythmic pride in craftsmanship like this, tucked away in a small garage/workshop off a side street.

Continuing with my People of Morocco - Stoking the fires under the city of Marrakech
Farnatchi are the traditional ovens found below the streets of Marrakech, heating the pipes that transport the water and steam the hammams.

In additional these fires have another very important use. This is to slow cook the classic dish Tangia, named after the clay pot it is cooked in, in the embers of the fire. This traditional recipe is a meaty dish, usually made by the men.

To finish my Omar portrait series, I’ve edited these final images of Omar in black and white.
I like the contrast here, from the modern environmental style of him on his motorcycle to the timeless feel of the desert landscape behind him and a close-up in black and white to show his kind smile.

Taking these was a hugely enjoyable experience and a big step for my portrait photography. A final thank you to Omar for his time. Merzouga is such a special place

Following on from my last post, here is the second in the series of Omar portraits in the Sahara…

Indoor portraits of Omar at Azalay
A portrait session with Omar at the Azalay Hotel in Merzouga.
These indoor shots were much moodier than the ones we took outside. I wanted to focus on the textures and the quiet atmosphere of the place. It was a great learning experience for me, especially working with these deeper shadows.
Omar was a fantastic and patient gentleman model!

The Sahara & The Artisan
Merzouga, Morocco
I’m just back from an amazing photo tour around Morocco with over 2,000 photos and a whole load of editing to do. I’m starting with a portrait series, as this was one of the highlights of our trip (there were several) and portrait shooting is not my normal genre, so this was a really interesting and fun session for me.

In the Sahara Desert in Merzouga, we were lucky enough to encounter Omar, a local artisan.
We had a fabulous portrait session with him against the backdrop of the desert and the Azalay Hotel. This was a bit out of my comfort zone, but a great learning experience. We could not have had a more patient gentleman model!
I hope I’ve captured his smile and a sense of the culture here.

This is the first of three posts from our session, showing the different moods of the day.

Seeing Mont St Michel a little differently

This is one of the most photographed landmarks in France, so I wanted to put a slightly different slant on it.
First image - I have created a multiple exposure using the mud and rocky seabed at low tide that I was standing on while taking the photo to add interest and texture to the image.

It was a beautiful, still morning with blue skies and white puffy clouds. Fabulous to see this iconic landmark up close. The low tide lapped all around, but I was wading around in the rocks and mud, dodging sheep.

The last image in this carousel was taken the afternoon before, scouting the location.

If you’ve been to St Malo you’ll probably recognise this diving platform, it’s a bit of an icon on the Plage du Bon-Secours. At high tide, it’s a favourite swimming spot and at low tide it sits stranded on the sand like a sculpture.
We went down to the beach for sunset and ended up staying for ages as the light kept changing from soft pastels, moody clouds and a brief burst of warm colour as the sun dropped behind the islands. These long exposures show off the calm water and those big rolling skies St. Malo does so well.
Swipe through for a mix of moments from the same evening; some drama, some calm and a black & white version.
A little bit of background: the seawater pool and diving board were designed in the 1930s by local architect Yves Hémar and opened in 1936 which makes it a proper St Malo landmark as well as a great subject to photograph.

Brittany
Lighthouses in black & white

No trip to Brittany is complete without a lighthouse or two, so here are four favourites:

1. La Pointe Saint-Matthieu
2. Phare de Kermorvan
3. Phare du Pontusval
4. Le Phare du Petit Minou

It was one of those weeks with moody, fast-changing weather, no huge storms or crashing waves, sadly, so I focused on the calm atmosphere, shifting skies and that lovely sense of being by the sea. I went for black & white edits to bring out the drama and detail.
Swipe to the end to see how they look framed. Perfect if you’re a Brittany lighthouse fan (or know someone who is!), they’d make a great gift!

Nothing makes me happier than being by the sea… I could watch the waves for hours.
