This month, CEO Matt Buchanan recommends May’s hottest re-release for its 40th anniversary, Top Gun (and its sequel Top Gun: Maverick), as well as Charlotte Wells’ directorial debut, Aftersun – a slightly unorthodox combination.

𝑻𝒐𝒑 𝑮𝒖𝒏 (1986) is an iconic, timeless action film starring Tom Cruise as Maverick a daring US Navy pilot. This Oscar-winning film follows the talented young pilot as he’s accepted into the elite Fighter School. 𝑻𝒐𝒑 𝑮𝒖𝒏: 𝑴𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 (2022), the sequel, follows Maverick’s return to Top Gun to train the elite graduates. He must confront the ghosts of his past...

𝑨𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒖𝒏 (2022), a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama starring Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio and Celia Rowlson-Hall, the film follow an 11-year-old Scottish girl on holiday with her father at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday.

Matt says: “These films have more in common than meets the eye... addressing themes of mental health, ageing and male friendship.”

There’s still time to catch the re-releases of Akira and Amélie on the silver screen – both of which we would be showing if The Belmont Cinema were open.

🍿 Akira’s re-release marks a major revival of the 1988 cyberpunk masterpiece directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, widely recognised for its influence on modern sci-fi and animation.

Set in the future, 30 years after Tokyo was ruined in an explosion, Tetsuo goes on a dangerous rampage, which threatens to turn apocalyptic, and Kaneda tries to stop him. With the story looping itself around themes such as wayward governments and disillusioned youth, Akira is just as relevant in 2026.

🍿 And, celebrating its 25th Anniversary, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie returns to cinemas...

The lonely 23-year-old Amélie decides to become an active member of her community by doing good deeds for those around her.

As the team works hard to bring The Belmont Cinema back for everyone in Aberdeen’s benefit, we’re showcasing a selection of films loved by our team 🧡
