Aberdeen given ‘glow-up’ in bold bid to attract Gen Z tourists!

Aberdeen has been given a digital-age makeover in a new tourism campaign aimed at attracting Gen Z travellers, with the city temporarily rebranded as “Aberizz.”

The campaign has been created by brand and digital marketing specialists GenX Oldies With Kooky Solutions (GOWKS) in partnership with the North East Scotland Tourism Society (NESTS), who say the rebrand is designed to make the Granite City “relatable, meme-ready, and algorithm-friendly.”

Tourism remains a major part of Scotland’s economy. VisitScotland reports that the country welcomed 4.37 million international visitors in 2024, generating more than £4 billion annually. Aberdeen attracts around 1.1 million visitors each year, with highlights including the Town House, Castlegate and Marischal College, all of which campaign organisers describe as having “strong main-character energy.”

Avril Feel from NESTS said the new campaign focuses on a demographic the city has struggled to connect with. “Research shows that Gen Z is a largely untapped market for Aberdeen. We realised that traditional messaging like ‘historic architecture’ and ‘coastal heritage’ was not cutting through, so we pivoted to vibes. With support from GOWKS, we’ve developed an omni-channel strategy built around the slogan ‘Aberrizz is the biz’, which we believe speaks directly to the youth.”

Cill Lee from GOWKS, described as the creative mastermind behind the campaign, explained how the branding was developed. “Using the latest techniques in generative AI, trend forecasting, and whatever the interns said was funny, we created a visual identity that feels authentic to Gen Z audiences. We combined the three towers from Aberdeen’s coat of arms with two rivers representing the Dee and the Don, and some wildlife to produce a logo that is both culturally respectful and extremely online.”

Lee confirmed that several alternative slogans were considered before the final decision. “We tested a range of options, including ‘Aberdeezer, it’s a beezer’, ‘Abersigma, it’s an enigma’, and ‘Granite but make it slay.’ Ultimately, we wanted to capture the sense that Aberdeen is the kind of place where you can show up, have a fly cup, stare at the North Sea, and feel windswept and interesting.”

Celebrating a significant milestone in book sales today! 🚀

My Doric for Beginners book has sold over 4.2K copies, and when combined with my other 2 books, that's a whopping 5,000+ in book sales. I can't quite believe it, as self-published books sell an average of around 250 copies over their lifetime, with over 90% selling fewer than 100 copies. Apparently if you sell over 5,000 copies, it's considered a major achievement. Woop woop! 🎉

I am so very grateful to all the wonderful indie stockists and customers who have supported my side hustle. It gives me creative freedom to allow me a free rein with my imagination and express what's inside my random, jazzy, left-field brain. This is my ikigai, that gets me out of bed every morning. My creative cup is filled to the brim and overflowing. Cheers!

If you'd like to stock copies of my 'bestseller' 😊 please get in touch.

Happy World Book Day 2026!

The year of the Fire Horse has certainly galloped in with a storm of creative activity for me! I’ve been busy working up some new Doric titles for you to enjoy. For World Book Day, I thought I’d share my sketches for four books that I’ve currently got in the pipeline for this year and into next:

1. Doric in yer Pooch
Local travel guide wi a twist. A coothie wee pocket guide for travellers exploring the North East corner of Scotland.

2. A Fantoosh o’ Futrets
Imaginative children’s book with collective nouns o critters in Doric, featuring lively illustrations.

3. The Curse o’ the Sands o’ Forvie
A Doric Manga-sytle Graphic Novel based on the folklore tale of Fivie, and how it came to be buried.

4. My First hunner words in Doric
Illutrated guide for pre-schoolers and early learners of Doric.

Other ideas simmering in my head are but not yet fully formed include:

5. Chilloot at...series
An augmented reality kiddies mindfulness adventure, taking a slow jouney through a favourite local beauty spot; Burn o’ Vat in the Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve etc, and taking in all the smells, sights and sounds of the area for an immersive, relaxing experience. This ties in with my Doric wellness channel called Chilloot (still a work in progress).

6. Cheesy Quavers
A book about teenage ravers in an Aberdeen highschool, a coming of age story.

7. A Lovliness of Ladybirds
Illustrated book of groups, interacting, socialising and solving conflict, overall theme of individual dignity and living in peace and harmony.

8. Aul age disnae come itsel
Collection of humerous illustrated stories and poems.

Dinna go stealing aa my ideas noo!

I’m also taking commissions, so if you’ve got a great idea for a book, but need a creative designer to help to bring it to life, give me a shout.

On a serious note, World Book day is so important. It shouldn’t be about dressing up in natty costumes. It should be an inclusive, low-cost, fun event that everyone can join in with, no matter the cost. Encouraging and instilling a love of reading for pleasure in out children has been proven by research from The Scottish Book trust, to be the single most important indicator in a child’s future success. That equates to social mobility, and enabling children to climb out of poverty.

Giving children access to books to read plays a huge part in this. So save our libraries, don’t shut them, or cut funding to them, follow Sweden’s lead and invest in them. We should open even more libraries!

That’s why I fully support World Book Day every year, and this afternoon, I’m away to speak to the P1s at my local primary school and hand out free copies of Furryboots, to pass on my passion for reading and give them access to books.
