For those who believed that Alfred Bestall was the originator of the character, Rupert Bear and all his companions, think again!

It was Mary Tourtel, (1874 - 1948) who was the creator of Rupert Bear, and born Mary Cardwell into an artistic family, her father being a stained-glass artist and stonemason, with one brother continuing the stained-glass tradition and another becoming an animal painter in Africa. Following her training at the Sidney Cooper School of Art in Canterbury she pursued a career in book illustration with her first books, A Horse Book and Three Little Foxes, appearing in 1897, the year she married a sub-editor on the Daily Express named Herbert Tourtel.

In 1920 the Express decided they ought to compete with the Daily Mail’s highly successful children's comic strip and Tourtel, being a classically trained artist, well-established children's book illustrator and former contributor to the paper was put forward. Although not an immediate runaway success, Tourtel's versified strips soon gained popularity, first being published in book form as early as 1921 by Thomas Nelson, with Sampson Low taking over proceedings by 1924 when they published the Rupert Little Bear's Adventures series. As the character gained popularity throughout the late Twenties and early Thirties the Express was keen to capitalise and asked Tourtel to take on the extra burden of supplying additional comics to a weekly supplement of which Rupert would be the centrepiece. The additional work, combined with failing eyesight and the illness of her husband, forced Tourtel to retire in 1935. Not wishing to lose Rupert, the paper looked for a replacement artist and in 1936 decided on Alfred Bestall who successfully built on Mary’s success. Mary’s “Little Lost Bear”, initially created to win sales from rival papers, is still in print nearly 100 years later, with the Rupert Annual remaining a firm favourite with children today.

Vivienne Sharman-Lewis shows the Abergavenny Arts Fest her portfolio of professional Illustrations

https://youtu.be/UHPC0QJ3umA

With a style described as stylised realism, Vivienne’s fascination with illustration, began in childhood when she crept into her grandfather's study to pour over his beautiful books of fairy tales with their subtle watercolours by Arthur Rackham.

Her mother's bedtime stories also set her imagination alight, with favourites such as Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree, which led to many childhood adventures in search of that tree and all its fairy folk. This inspired her to write and illustrate her own stories which she regaled to her wide-eyed younger brothers at bed-time.

Following her degree in Graphic Design and illustration, Vivienne illustrated Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne for LadyBird Books, which was recently produced as an audiobook, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, then produced work, via her London Agent and for advertising agencies.

As the Visualiser at Selfridges Design Studio in London, Vivienne also created visuals for their world famous window displays, that were reproduced in the TV Times and Daily Mirror, and for their exhibitions and interior displays. She later produced illustrations for packaging and Children’s Television in Wales.

Now, she is currently writing and illustrating her own series of children’s adventure books, “The Eight Pearls of Wisdom”, an adventurous journey set at different periods in the swash-buckling history of the sub-tropical island of Tenerife, where she lived for eight years, encompassing historical fact, myths, legends and even science fiction.

Vivienne loves to produce her original compositions in pencil, which are then transferred onto wash and line board (not) mounted with Hollingsworth paper and finished in water colour washes and gouache and she has also used pen and ink and most recently has started to work again in oil on canvas.
