First Milk has announced that its Chief Executive, Shelagh Hancock, will retire in early 2027 after ten years leading the British farmer-owned dairy co-operative.

During her tenure, Shelagh has overseen a period of significant growth and transformation for First Milk, strengthening its financial position, investing in processing capability, deepening customer relationships and positioning the business for long-term, sustainable growth. This has included major site investments and the acquisition of BV Dairy, alongside the development of a market-leading regenerative agriculture programme.

Under her leadership, First Milk became a Certified B Corporation and was awarded a King’s Award for Sustainable Development, reflecting its commitment to delivering value for members while operating responsibly.

The Board has commenced a formal process to appoint a successor, with a structured transition planned to ensure continuity of leadership. Shelagh will remain in post until early next year to support the transition.

Shelagh Hancock, Chief Executive of First Milk, said:
β€œIt has been a privilege to work with our members, colleagues and partners to build a business with strong foundations for the future. I am proud of the progress we have made together - from investing in our facilities and capabilities, to leading the way in regenerative agriculture and sustainability. First Milk is well placed for the future, and I look forward to supporting a smooth transition to my successor.”

Hugo Mahoney, Chairman of First Milk, added:
β€œShelagh has made an outstanding contribution to First Milk since she took on the role in early 2017. Under her leadership, the business has evolved into a more resilient co-operative, with a clear strategic direction and a focus on delivering long-term value for our members.
