Following a recent survey at herstmoncuex castle this large oak was found to have multiple Ganoderma brackets present, alongside signs of declining health. Due to its close proximity to both a house and the road, the decision was made to safely fell the tree to mitigate future risk.
The large trunk is now being carved into a sheep in memory of โ Peter the sheep โ
Peter the Sheep was a Southdown lamb born in 1914 who became the highly celebrated military mascot for the Royal Sussex Regiment (specifically the 11th, 12th, and 13th Battalions) during the First World War. Because of Peter and their commanding officer, Colonel Claude Lowther (the owner of the castle), the thousands of local Sussex men who enlisted in these battalions were affectionately nicknamed "Lowtherโs Lambs".
Peter lived his days in the grounds of herstmoncuex castle and lived till he was 14 ,into 1920 , he was buried in the grounds of the castle with full military honours
