Apparently today is International Mario Day. 🍄 Yes… MAR10. Marketing people love a good bit of wordplay.

Which got me thinking — Mario from Nintendo might actually be one of the best marketing case studies around.

Think about it:

𝐑𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠
Red hat. Blue overalls. Giant moustache. You could recognise him from about 200 metres away.

𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲
The games have changed, the graphics have improved, but the brand has stayed instantly recognisable since the 80s.

𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠
Hero. Adventurer. Problem solver. Occasionally a plumber.

Also worth noting that Mario has spent 40 years rescuing Princess Peach — which is arguably the longest-running campaign with a single objective in history.

Strong messaging.
Clear call to action.
Relentless ex*****on.
Not bad for a fictional plumber.

Meanwhile in marketing, our idea of jumping over obstacles is getting sign off from 4 different members of the SLT so we can FINALLY hit “send” on a campaign.

🚨 This one made me stop and think — not as a marketer, but as a mum.

The UK government is consulting on banning social media for under-16s. Australia has already acted, and other countries are watching closely.

I’m a mum of three young children, and although they’re still little, I know this issue isn’t far off for us. I already find myself thinking ahead — about screen time, online influence, what they see, who shapes their opinions, and how much of it happens when adults aren’t looking.

Social media can be brilliant. It connects us, educates us, entertains us. But it can also be relentless. As parents, we’re often trying to keep up with something that’s evolving faster than the guidance around it.

I don’t know if banning social media is the right answer. What I do know is that many parents feel overwhelmed and under-supported when it comes to protecting their children online.

From a professional point of view, this feels like a moment of reckoning for platforms and brands alike. Growth and engagement can’t be the only measures of success anymore — trust and responsibility have to matter too.

This feels bigger than marketing. Bigger than politics.

It’s about the kind of digital world we’re creating for our kids — before they even get a say in it.

I’d really welcome thoughts from other parents and professionals. How do you feel about this conversation?
