I always find the time between Christmas and New Year interesting as a business owner. Whilst no doubt some people love the down time, personally I find it a little frustrating.

Don’t get me wrong I love time with the family and walking the dogs / gym with the kids and pottering in the garden (yes I did cut my grass on boxing day) but the down time gets my brain ticking. I tend to think about the year ahead and what I need to change next year to make it better than this year and what does that look like - from here I going into an ideas overdrive.

I have to admit this year my poor wife Callender has been forced to rolled her eyes at me more than usual when I’ve shared my latest brain fart that’s going to make us millions or something I want to change. Even the chickens threaten an egg strike if they have to listen to one more idea….But that’s just it isn’t it.

The opportunity to talk through plans and thoughts with other business owners is limited, and trying to find someone willing to listen to the ideas is equally challenging.

That’s something I’m going to change this year.

I’m going build a very small network of business owners that are around 95% of the time. Whether it be a quick call, a WhatsApp message or voice note. A group of confidants who can give me a different perspective on ideas and encourage me to run with it - or go back to the drawing board whichever is needed.

Like a business family.

Is there anyone else in my network that feels the same? Would like to join a little community who’s more often than not is around.

If like the sound of it drop me a message or comment below and we can have a chat to see if we’re on the same page.

People often over complicate marketing campaigns.

Let’s be honest the main aim is to get your products in front of your target audience, or at least your brand so you are top of mind when they need to buy your service.

This morning I saw just that, and it was so simple it was beautiful. I’m doing some work at a magnetics company in Burton on Trent and like what’s happened in thousands of companies this morning the decision was made to get some bacon butties in. We wrote the list and Toneia and I set off to procure the probably the most popular breakfast in the UK.

Now there is a a little roadside cafe near Burton Football club that I’ve driven past a fair few times and it’s always been busy so we decided to give it a go. We got there and joined the queue, and like many cafes there was a board for businesses to promote themselves by leaving a business card but one company has gone a step further and it’s super smart.

They’ve sponsored the cafe so every sandwich is being handed out in a branded food bag with their logo on! Naturally it stood out front he standard white bag your food normally comes in so I had a look at the company MKM.

They supply a mixture of building supplies, kitchens, landscaping materials and loads more, and out of 8 people in the queue there were 7 tradesman.

Undoubtably their perfect target market!!
Genius!!

Just got me thinking what other business is talking to your target market regular that you don’t compete with and do a joint venture.

Top work by the marketing team at mkm.com!!

Had a really interesting one last week.

I’ve been helping out a client with some email marketing. Over the last few months we been stepping away from the normal ‘buy our stuff’ and ‘here’s an offer’ to more of an engagement strategy.

Yes, we still do the offers and promotions but we’ve been mixing it in with things that are happening in the office and the world in general, and it’s working. We’re getting more responses, more engagement, better calls on the follow ups and ultimately more sales.

HOWEVER there is always that one person. The one that feels the need to complain you’re not sending out boring industry standard ‘here our best price per metre’ type emails. They replied moaning, then called the office within 10minutes of the email being sent.

I couldn’t be happier!! I mean I’m truly delighted with that result.

He’s not only reading the emails, he taking action! Yes its not the desired action at this point but he called in and spoke to one of the sales team, admitted he like the product and it created an opportunity for future business.

All you can do with marketing create the opportunity, so job done Lee.

I remember being at a Dan Kennedy conference in Texas a few years back and one thing that was said from the stage “If you haven’t pi***ed someone off with your marketing by lunch, your either not sending enough marketing, or your playing it too safe’

I couldn’t agree more this morning.

So as we settle into 2022, outsourcing some tasks has left me with the opportunity to take on board three new clients.

However, I’m not just looking for clients who can afford to hire a marketing consultant. Im looking for the right fit, but be honest what does that mean?

Let me start by telling you what I’m not. In not a charter marketeer, I’m not going to spend days / weeks profiling your current clients and ask them a million and one questions about what it's like to do business with you. Im not going to waste hours perfecting one email or direct mail piece. I’m not going to suggest we spend thousands of pounds on campaigns without testing them first.

What I am going to do, is inject some fun and different campaigns into your business. For example one of the campaigns I ran, we spilt out 100 dream clients, send them a series of emails and direct mail follow ups, with a personalised video email (it’s so easy to do these things now) and for those that didn’t respond we sent them a mobile phone so they had no excuse not to call!

It was fun, interactive and it worked!

So if you’re looking to give your marketing a kick in 2022 give me a shout and we’ll have a chat.

New about our relaunch

19/03/2020

Ok - Like many thousand other small business owners I spent most of the night awake thinking WTF

But... what if you flipped your thinking, if you could be in one business right now what would it be? For me it would be IT security with everyone working from home etc.

Now the real question....

What business do you want to be in when this is over, and how do you get into it either by investing, or retraining?

Let me know what you think!
