"And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split." - Matthew 27 v 50-51
Sometimes we read scripture and pass over words and phrases. I know I am guilty of days when I study the scripture properly and deeply and others when I do my reading and close it again. However, this passage has always had significance to me so I thought I would share on here ❤️ when Jesus says it is finished and the curtain was torn in two.
All three gospels - Matthew, Mark and Luke state that the curtain was torn. This curtain wasn't just an ordinary filmsy living room curtain, it was made of 72 twisted plaits of 24 threads each and it was about 60 X 30 feet. It was in the Jewish holy temple and was used to separate the holy place (the early dwelling place of God's presence) from man. A priest was only allowed to enter once a year to make atonement for the sins of Israel. It shows us man was separated from God because of sin.
This curtain torn in two wasn't something that could have been done by a person and it was one of a few physical events that happened at the time of his death. The curtain also has historical significance when the Romans desolate Jerusalem in A.D 70 which Jesus had said would happen. It signifies a new way, a way that removes separation from God and his people. God would never dwell again in an earthly place and now through Jesus we can go directly to him. None of us are perfect, we mess up and fail daily, no one can say they have it together but no one can say they aren't good enough either because it's not about us it's about that moment Jesus cried it is finished, 'paid in full'.♥️
