Here is a secret - I hate the term 'brand story' because it is often used to sell you on an idea of what your brand is, not what it could be. A brand story is such a powerful tool in experienced hands but when used wrong it acts as a blockade for any new ideas to break through. In this case the 'story' serves only to stifle your creativity and ambition; it causes easily avoided tunnel vision.

The problem with the term is that it implies your 'story' is over by the time you've made it to where you are - all books have an end after all. But that's not how we work, we are all people of ambition, living in a constantly evolving world. Your branding isn't a memoir, it is part of a larger journey. Your brand shouldn't just be what you have but what you want/what you aspire to be.

If your brand were a tower of cards, we would fit your story at the bottom row, the foundations that prop the rest up. There is always more to tell, and so, more cards to be added. Some people come to me with unfaltering foundations, others need help building them. Sometimes our towers fall and so we rebuild with stronger foundations. Unlike a book, that has an end, your foundations have the potential of becoming wider and stronger, able to withstand and carry the weight of more, and so creating a brand with authenticity that holds up to any scrutiny. We're all at different stages in our tower of cards, but never finished with them, so let's stop treating them that way.

I bought this font on impulse alone. Is it a nice font? Sure. But in a sea of 'nice' Sans Serifs that currently occupy my library, it suddenly seems less special. I definitely didn't need it but I bought it anyway. Why? Because it was presented so well. The sample graphics made me believe that I needed it and so I bought it. Having your product presented well drives consumer impulse more than any other factor. With over 50% of all purchases being driven by impulse, it's a no-brainer that you should think about how consumers view your product and how presentation can help drive sales from potential new customers.
