Word of the Week: Salience

Salience describes how the brain decides what matters most in a given moment.

Pain is salient by design.
It captures attention, disrupts behaviour, and reshapes priorities.

Effective pain management isn’t only about reducing intensity.
It’s about reducing disruption to daily life.

The same principle applies to healthcare communication.

In a crowded landscape, the most effective pain campaigns aren’t the loudest – they’re the most relevant. They focus on what truly matters to patients and healthcare professionals at the point of decision-making, and communicate it with clarity, credibility, and precision.

Pain: From electric fish to medicine

Pain is one of the few experiences that connects every era of human history, and the search to relieve it is just as old. The word itself comes from the Latin poena, meaning ‘punishment,’ reflecting how deeply we experience it.

For thousands of years, many Indigenous peoples in North America used willow bark to ease fever and aches. They didn’t know it then, but willow contains salicin, the precursor of aspirin. In the ancient world, Egyptian, Greek and Roman physicians even used shocks from electric fish to numb certain kinds of pain, alongside early remedies like poppy resin, one of history’s first potent analgesics.

By the 19th century, ether was used during childbirth, soon followed by chloroform, morphine, and the earliest attempts to understand pain scientifically.

Today, pain science advances faster than ever, yet the mission remains the same: helping people live with less suffering and more dignity.

At Life, we bring the same focus and creativity to pain management advertising, crafting campaigns that resonate with patients and healthcare professionals. Since 2000, we’ve worked across pain areas including migraine, chronic cancer pain, and joint pain.

Let us help your brand share that mission and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Back in the 1950’s and 60s, pharmaceutical advertising was a bit of a Wild West – glossy claims, celebrity endorsements and little oversight. After several safety scandals including the thalidomide tragedy in the 60s, public trust in medicine was shattered.

This led to the Medicines Act in 1968, a landmark law that transformed how medicines were approved, marketed and monitored in the UK. It introduced strict controls on advertising, making sure that promotional claims were truthful, balanced and evidence based.

Today, the MHRA and ABPI Code of Practice continue to uphold these principles, keeping pharma communications accurate, responsible and grounded in science.

Some see these regulations as a barrier to creativity. We see them as a ‘creative challenge’ – how do you create a campaign that turns heads but still ticks every compliance box?

Give us a shout if you’d like to see just how creative we can get while playing by the rules.

After endless months of strategy, planning and enough meetings to qualify as an Olympic sport, you’re finally ready to launch a new creative campaign that will knock your competitor’s socks off.

Armed with your hard-earned budget, you brief your long-standing creative agency. The mission is simple. Create the most ‘out-there’ campaign the industry has ever seen.

You’re excited. They’re excited. Everything is going exactly to plan!

Until you’re hit with the Big Bad Bs.

Boring. Bland. Beige.

Instead of innovation and ingenuity, they give you lukewarm lacklustre ideas that miss the mark entirely. Extracting fresh ideas feels like pulling teeth, but after some not so gentle poking and prodding you land on a concept you like…..ish.

It’s too late for changes. The print deadline looms. Your stress levels are rising. You reach out to your agency, just for a little reassurance that all is on track.

Crickets.

They’ve ghosted you harder than your last Tinder date.

Finally, the day before the deadline, a reply! Everything’s on track. You exhale. Crisis averted.

Or is it?

Because just as you start celebrating survival, the bill arrives. And suddenly, your campaign isn’t just boring, bland and beige, it’s budget-busting!

Don’t let the Big Bad Bs derail your campaign.
Swipe right and let us bring your ideas to Life.

Schooools out for Summer!

It’s that time of year where holidays are triple the price, every BBQ is a gamble – soggy sausage anyone? – and by week two, you’ve Googled “how long until school starts” more times that you’d care to admit.

The Life team is ready to enjoy a whole host of summer plans, including:
• Fun at the beach
• Teaching a new puppy to swim
• Enjoying summer evenings in the countryside
• Learning lots at a dog agility masterclass
• Backpacking in the Lake District
• Camping in Dorset
• Kayaking on the Thames
