What do I need to build a website?

Four main things

✅Brand name
✅Domain name
✅Website platform
✅Website hosting

Brand name is self-explanatory however plenty of people fuss over websites before getting a name nailed down, just ChatGPT some rough ideas then narrow them down if you really cannot think of anything.

Still not sure? Choose something self-explanatory: “Scotland dog toys” for example. The big benefit of this is it helps your search engine rankings because it's obvious what you're about.

Domain name

yourwebsite dot com is your domain name. Choosing a simple, self-explanitory brand name helps even further with your search engine rankings if you choose a similar domain name.

Do not think that everything needs a huge brand identity and a cult following deserving of a clever name. If someone wants some paint to fix their car dent, jamesshadedynamics is likely to get scrolled past. If your business provides a simple product or solution, don't over-embellish it.

Website platform

Really only two or three are note-worthy if you intend on doing it yourself. Shopify is a solid choice at the minute for ecommerce and squarespace will do fine for a simple four page site with no complicated requirements. In my experience, the rest are riddled with hidden problems and challenges that eat up your time and energy.

Website hosting

If you choose a DIY builder, this is likely offered but your space is probably shared with other websites and security is not always perfect. Siteground is simple and affordable and WPX is good for woocommerce.

There is more to deal with – device responsiveness, security, optimisation, headings and a list of other technicalities.

Should you spend thousands on a website?

Why spend thousands when you could do it yourself on squarespace or shopify?
(Hint, don’t use any of the other DIY site builders)

Well, you’ll screw something up. You probably won’t even realise it.

Darren built his own site for his butchers on a builder we won’t mention but he wasn’t getting many orders and he actually LOST foot traffic to his competitors, they even walked past his shop to get to his rivals!

Why was this? Well it was no coincidence. He set up his site but didn’t properly test it or find the bugs.

So despite it working fine on his phone, it didn’t work well on others - the “add to cart” button was half hidden behind the next product, such shoddiness ended up turning the customers off entering their bank details into a clearly unreliable site.

Have you looked at shopify yet?
What about magento, big commerce?

Which should you choose?
Answer, and surprise! It doesn't matter. They're all good but in a nutshell if you're starting out then get someone to make you a shopify or woocommerce site.
Don't bother with ANYTHING ELSE!

Most of the things that make a difference are how you use and leverage the site. Which is easiest with woocommerce right now, in my experience.

You need analytics, you need security, speed, someone monitoring the health of your precious site so you don't waste time and energy researching how to fix a bug.

Think you're capable of just pouring a coffee and dedicating half an hour to fixing any technical issues? Trust me, it's not that simple; trying to fix an issue like a checkout option glitching can cost you energy that would be better used for other things. That's not even considering how many sales you lose because people get put off by that glitch, and when are you actually going to be made aware of the issue?

You need peace of mind knowing it's done right and an email address to fire questions to like "would you recommend a configurator? Do I need SEO at this point" etc.

We can make you a site, optimise it and get it live without you worrying about anything and it will be far more effective than one you launch yourself. I used to make quite a bit of money debugging shopify sites for people and the number of missed opportunities or flaws that I saw them making in the process.
