Chambré is seeking an ambitious and dynamic individual with exceptional communication skills and an excellent understanding of the politics of Northern Ireland and its neighbours. This is a great opportunity for a candidate with a strong interest in politics and policy making to take the next step in their career at an agency with over 18 years’ experience of providing insight and working with clients to build relationships and inform policy.

Supported by an experienced team, the successful candidate will provide political intelligence and consultancy support to clients, across a number of policy areas, including energy, climate change, health, housing and gambling related harm.

The successful candidate will have a good understanding of the governance structures of Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the European Union, and experience of either public affairs, politics, or journalism.

Families bereaved through gambling related su***de were joined in the Long Gallery, Stormont, on Tues (18 Feb 2020) by MLAs, healthcare workers, community representatives and other concerned folk to hear a) why we need to protect the public, especially the young and vulnerable, from aggressive marketing and unsafe harmful gambling products, and b) what needs to be done. Chambré is privileged to support the fantastic Gambling with Lives as it seeks to raise awareness in Northern Ireland of the dangerous effects of gambling on mental health.

Main responsibilities

• Gathering and disseminating political intelligence for our tailored monitoring and research service. This includes coverage and reporting of Assembly, UK Parliament, and Oireachtas committee proceedings, reviewing plenary sessions and checking written answers as well as alerting our clients and team to relevant political and policy developments.
• Compiling monitoring reports that accurately and succinctly convey relevant developments within the political institutions and other bodies that influence the policy making process in the region.
• Undertaking research and policy analysis on a wide range of issues as required.
• Taking an investigative approach to policy developments, alerting team/clients to important announcements and identifying potential implications.
• Managing and maintaining the Chambré contacts database.
• Assisting with the planning and delivery of Chambré events, and client events and engagement programmes.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:
• A Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2:1 classification (applicants not meeting this specification will be considered in exceptional circumstances)
• Excellent knowledge of the Northern Ireland political environment and legislative and policymaking process
• An understanding of the work of a public affairs agency
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Good IT skills with experience of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint) and ideally WordPress and Mailchimp
• The ability to use social media effectively – particularly Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
• The ability to organise, prioritise and plan; manage time and workload effectively, with limited supervision
• Attentiveness to detail, a strong work ethic and the ability to work to a deadline

Conditions

• Part-time position (three days per week).
• The successful candidate will be entitled to 17 days paid annual leave (including the usual bank and public holidays in Northern Ireland).
• They will also be required to comply with the Public Affairs Board Code of Conduct.

We’re is looking for applicants with excellent research, communication and analytical skills and, of course, a keen interest in the unique politics of Northern Ireland (and beyond). The programme will provide valuable experience in political monitoring and policy research as well as the skills needed to succeed in public affairs. Because of the part-time, flexible nature of the position, we will endeavour to fit hours around the timetable of any current students. Both undergraduates and postgraduates are welcome to apply.
