At the beginning of the 19th century, Belfast was a port with small wooden docks. There was also the Blackstaff River—a muddy stretch of water that completely changed the city's destiny!
The population of Belfast increased from 19,000 in 1801 to over 70,000 in 1841 as the linen industry exploded. Belfast was transforming into 'Linenopolis,' the linen capital of the world, and its mills were absolutely ravenous for water. In 1832, Captain John Boyd and his brother-in-law, John Hind, officially opened the Blackstaff Mill on Durham Street.

Time changes landscapes. What once seemed permanent can, with the passing of years, take on an entirely different meaning.

I love looking at old photographs and seeing places through the lens of their former glory — imagining the life, stories, and moments that once surrounded them.

Christ Church was built in 1833, during the time when Captain Boyd established the mill at College Square North and Durham Street.

Christ Church, built between 1831 and 1833 to the design of architect William Farrell, is a beautiful example of the Greek Revival style. Though the building was severely damaged by fire in 1996, its historic façade and structure were saved and carefully restored in 2003 by the Belfast Buildings Preservation Trust.

Captain Boyd established the mill in the early 1830s, when it operated as a small linen mill. The first edition of the Ordnance Survey map, from 1832–1833, shows a small linen mill on the site. By the end of the 1850s, the mill had developed into a large industrial complex occupied by the Blackstaff Flax Spinning and Weaving Company
