Lockdown has caused a massive surge in people using the internet, for work, for shopping and to socialise. We all know that Facebook and Twitter and all the others are great for business but you really do need to know what you're doing or else you end up like most people (myself included at times) where you get all excited, post things every day for a week .... then nothing.

It's no secret that Facebook have algorithms to work out who your followers are, what sort of stuff they like to see (you tell them this by clicking on posts and writing comments), so you need to have a good plan in place for your social media.

That's where we can help. Check out the first page on the new website to show everything we can do for sure in terms of social media marketing and promotion.

Whether you need an audit or a full blown social media strategy, talk to us first.

Seems like we might not be able to rely on Google Analytics soon. Obviously Google Chrome will never block it (same company) but Firefox is jumping on the private data bandwagon as they are big advocates for it and they are now blocking Google Analytics as default. You can turn it on for each site you visit, but who's going to do that !!

Representatives from Mozilla, parent company of Firefox, have explained why the browser is now blocking Google Analytics by default.

If you're finding a lot of Direct/None visitors in your Google analytics, there could be a very simple explanation. If your website is HTTP (i.e not secure) and the website that links to you uses HTTPS then the browser may not pass the referer name for security reasons. This results in a visitor with no referer and therefore Direct/None appearing in Google Analytics.

The easy solution, upgrade your website to use an SSL certificate so that you don't lose out on knowing who is referrring people to your website :-)

Hhhhmmm, we've come across a new SQL Injection vunerability which is not good news for some websites. If you have a database back-end and pages which display dynamic content, get in touch and I'll do a quick check for you.

Who says that web design isn't rock and roll. To make sure I understand what's needed, the next few evenings will be spent reading the full GDPR legislation to get to the important bits and decide what we need to do to be fully compliant by May 2018 !!

Anyone who is silly enough to still be using Wordpress for their website, have a read of this. If you're on version 4.7.1 or 4.7.1, then you are open to the world and any of your pages can be edited from anywhere in the world, no passwords necessary. We have 2 customers who this has already affected this week. Time to upgrade people, or move to a more secure platform.

If you were ever concerned that Google knows too much, how about this one ...... my debit card expires this month so the bank has sent out a new one (which I haven't received yet). I get an email from Google Adwords along the lines of "your bank has told us you have a new card, so we've updated your billing details". So they have put the new card number and expiry date in already, before I've even seen the card or know the number myself. Crazy !!!

People always tell me that they host their websites with big companies and that those companies do their own backups. Well what happens when they mess-up ? This is why we always do remote backups to somewhere else ..... just in case :-)

If you get an email this week with the subject line reading something like "Domain [yourdomain] suspension notice" please do not open it and definitely don't click on the link, it is a spam email trying to phish for details. If you have received a similar message and would like to check your domain name, please get in touch and I can give you all the information you need.

This is not just for our customers, it's a spam email doing the rounds. The spammers can get your email address on the WHOIS information for your domain name.

"Behold, your content. Your business needs it. Your users want it. And yet no one seems quite sure what to do with it." A great extract from the book 'content strategy for the web'.

Website Tip Of The Day - make sure you know when your domain name is set to expire. Many people register domain names with an old email address so when it comes to renewing it, you might not get the reminder emails. If you're unsure, use the website www.who.is to check the expiry date and set yourself a reminder to renew the domain before the expiry date. If you're not sure of your login to the domain company, make sure to get it sorted today, rather than waiting until the domain is nearly expired, then you might be in trouble. If you're still unsure, get in touch and I can certainly help you out.

Find information on any domain name or website. Large database of whois information, DNS, domain names, name servers, IPs, and tools for searching and monitoring domain names.
