Team Europe are masters of meticulous planning in the Ryder Cup – and this year is no exception with some brilliant PR ex*****on.
Meticulous. Modern. Inspirational. Those were the three words used to describe 2014 captain Paul McGinley, who also played on three winning Ryder Cup teams and holed the winning putt in 2002.
Since getting the job 18 months previous he travelled the world, meeting with players, former captains and successful sports coaches like Alex Ferguson to build the right structure and atmosphere.
Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, was brought in to deliver a pep talk to the players. And McGinley used a series of motivational videos, posters and other messages to instill confidence in the team.
And this detailed and careful approach has already come through in Padraig Harrington, the skipper this weekend in Whistling Straits.
Harrington, who played in McGinley’s team in 2014, is clearly following in his footsteps after a masterstroke in the practice rounds.
Europe turned on the charm offensive for the US crowd, which is renowned for being raucous and hostile, by donning foam cheeseheads made famous by local NFL franchise Green Bay Packers.
The gesture drew a delighted reaction from the packed grandstand and was the idea of Harrington – and conceived 18 months ago.
Throwing the headgear into the crowd and wearing practice outfits mirroring the colours of the Packers also went down a storm.
This was a brilliant ex*****on in order to try and get the crowds onside. It’s not about switching allegiance from USA to Europe. If you’re American, you’re cheering for Team USA.
However, if actions like this help turn the volume down, Team Europe will have an advantage – and it’s these small margins that make all the difference.
