C P W Stonehouse Printing, design, illustration and copy in Wolverhampton and the West Midlands / Braille & Tactile Information for the Blind and Visually Impaired

My background in the graphics industry goes all the way back to the early 1980’s; when a late friend of mine, Eamonn Lynch and I set up a small printing business. Situated at the back of a small bookshop in Digbeth, Birmingham; in those days artwork was done with ink pens, Letraset, spray mount, Tippex fluid and surgical scalpels! After being a full time parent for most of the mid 1990’s, I return

ed to full time education in 1998. I achieved an upper second BSc (Hons) in Virtual Reality Design at the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, in Wolverhampton and went on to become an Architectural and Technical Illustrator. From about 2005 onwards I have taken on an ever wider variety of work. This has included designing shop fittings, preparing 3D files for manufacture, creating animations for English Heritage, designing high contrast and tactile museum information panels for blind and partially sighted people, as well as all manner of general graphic design and commercial art. In 2013 I became involved in printing again, as an independent print broker. This means as well as supplying high quality printed products to my own clients, at very competitive rates; I can also provide the same to other designers, at wholesale prices. I am also a copywriter and editor, so I can also help you develop written content for any of your designs and printed matter.

My latest project - commissioned by Noah Jepson of the Thanks-Giving Foundation in Texas - is the depiction of a spiral, stained glass ceiling; of the chapel in Thanks-Giving Square in Dallas. Made out of cast metal; this information panel features a representation of the architectural feature, with both tactile elements and well defined colour, along with a substantial description in Braille. This slideshow starts with the actual ceiling then follows the process through from the design, to casting to painting to final machining.

The dazzling thought-world of the Greeks gave us our ideas of democracy and happiness. Yet learning classics tends to be restricted to the privileged few. It’s time for ‘elitist dinosaurs’ to embrace a citizens’ classics for all

Here is a first glimpse of my latest job, with Acuity Design: a series of tactile line drawings with Braille titles, of various kinds of reptiles and mammals; both prehistoric and exist. This work was commissioned by Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Some of my interpretations were made from scratch, some were created in consultation with palaeontologists and a few were based on existing illustrations (with the original artists’ permissions). The illustration of an Allosaurus you can see here was based on Scott Hartman’s drawing (see skeletaldrawing.com).

This is an example of the cast metal Braille I provide, where toughness is a key requirement. Such work is guaranteed for thirty years but I can't see why it could not last much much longer.

These Braille signs in the new Library of Birmingham (UK) were really nice. The only problem is that they were not vandal proof. On my recent visit I did not find a single undamaged sign.
