Some products deserve more than a photograph of the finished product.
This was one of those.
The image on the right shows the finished leather bag. It’s clean, simple and hopefully makes you want to pick it up.
But it doesn’t really tell you how it was made.
So I photographed it again, this time by taking it apart visually.
The flat lay shows the individual pieces, components, tools and materials that go into making the finished bag. You can see the leather panels, handles, zip, fittings and the tools used by the artisans that created it.
Put everything together and you get the finished product.
I wanted the photograph to tell the story of the craftsmanship rather than simply show the end result.
Because when something is handmade, there is a story behind it.
There are materials that have been carefully selected, components that have been cut and shaped, hardware that has been fitted and countless small details that have to be right before the finished product leaves the workshop.
The flat lay makes all of that visible.
It turns a product photograph into a story about how the product came to exist.
And that’s one of the things I really enjoy about commercial photography.
It’s not always about making something look pretty.
Sometimes it’s about finding a visual way to show people why it’s worth caring about.
