🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 One of the most meaningful parts of gathering in artist residency in Orkney has been the reflections that come from being in a group setting; each others experiences, backgrounds, learnings, references, and different practices, all overlapping.

Some of the things shared most casually have stuck most with me, and yet there was so much other intentional and rich guided learning during our week.

From holding stone-carved tools hundreds of thousands of years old, to the poetry that accompanies them.. digging into new terms, tools and meanings of what geology, archeology and people mean to a place; in Orkney, in Scotland, as a whole or beyond. For me at this stage in my practice these group perspectives are so helpful to speak freely and in good company without outside distractions.

The time away gave me a clear recommitment to what I’m working on now, what feels welcome to pursue in other art avenues and good dose of inspiration to push boundaries a little wider in general 🪨

Feeling lots of warmth after the exhibition opening for A Land in Motion at Conseil des arts de Chéticamp Gallery last night. It’s such a pleasure to be a part of this group show of what surely will be a vibrant hub for the long-existing and continually growing arts community here.

It’s been made more meaningful as this was a goal post for me to show artwork where my great-grandparents lived, worked, farmed and raised their family. They would have felt the true meaning of an abundant, yet harsh, landscape here long before I existed to make works to celebrate it.

A Land in Motion exhibition will be up in Chéticamp until August 22, nearly all the works shown in the gallery are for sale as well. 🌞

Special thanks to Sheila Ward and Amelie Jerome and all the folks involved with making Conseil de arts de Chéticamp happen. (Also couldn’t resist how great Dominique de Rouin felt work is ~ shown twice in the photos)

✨Take me to the river ✨ 2/3 of the ‘Portal to an Infinite Summer’ Series✨

💧 The river portal takes me to the place of the ever-changing mirror. As above, so below. The illusions broken with all the creatures breaking the surface. It’s a place I feel fortunate to continuously get lost in and never get tire of watching transform. Somehow the sunsets are never the same with the dancing light changing minute to minute over the shadows of the forest. 🌳

This series of portals serves as keepsakes for year-long reminders that the seasonal magic always comes back around again. 🪄 Original Work & Prints will be up soon for Breton Brewing’s Art on Tap in Sydney River, with 20% of sales going to charity. The original size is 2ft around 🌀 If you’re interested in purchasing but aren’t local ~ send me a note. 🌸 and stay tuned for an update soon.

1/3 ✨ ‘Portal to an Infinite Summer’ ✨Original Work & Prints will be up and available later this week for Breton Brewing’s Art on Tap in Sydney River, with 20% of sales going to charity. Original size is 21 inches around 🌀

🌸 I started the sketches for these round canvases when everything was just starting to pop up and bloom.. the forget-me-nots, tulips, crocus.. then lilacs, now the salty roses and rhododendron’s, peonies, lupins, the list goes on. I wanted to capture the feeling when you look out the window of a car on a perfect summer day, or catch a sunset that takes your breathe away.

The blooms come once a year so I made this series of portals for year-long reminders that the magic always comes back around again. 🪄

‘What more could you ever ask for?’ ☁️💭☁️

That was my contribution of one line for the collective poem we wrote at the top of the skyline trail in the Highlands at this time last June.

The Ground Rules exhibition has wrapped this week!I’m very grateful to have spoken about my work at the opening and have heard my new art friends speak about theirs, their creative influences, and where this residency and exhibition have taken their practice.

Thank you to everyone that made this possible; our curator and champion Kayla Rudderham & Vicki Clough + other folks at the Centre for Craft, CBRM Catalyst Funds, Corey Katz for these shots, Merrideth MacDonald for her attention to detail in framing, Parks Canada, TD, ++++ my pals that gave me all kinds of support.

Xox onto the next 🌷

👩🏻‍🎨 This evening (Thursday) 🔵 I’m happy to be showing my piece ⬆️ and gathering with new & old friends at the Opening for the Ground Rules Exhibition at the Centre for Craft and Design in Sydney 😊 Curatorial Q&A at 6pm with artists in the upstairs gallery ~~ Free snacks and beveverages on offer 🧀 All folks welcome 🌼

“The word Inheritance typically implies material goods or land passed on, but in this case for my work I was feeling into what I’ve inherited as part of my lived experiences; stories, mannerisms, and bodily features from my Acadian ancestors who lived in the Margaree and Cheticamp areas. This work is intended to feel alive. It shows a bird’s eye view of the mountain elevation and waterways of the Margaree from river to ocean. This is an abstraction of the truth of their experiences from someone fortunate to experience the same places they called home. “

💰 Partial funding for this work came from the CBRM Creative Catalyst funding

I’m happy to share that earlier in January I started in a new role as a Youth Development Coordinator, supporting underprivileged youth with art skills and training geared towards early career development.

This winter I’m working with 10 youths of various creative skills to nurture their interests and expand their ideas of what’s possible in the creative industries in Cape Breton, and beyond.

If you’re working in an arts/creative career, please feel free to share what advice you’d tell your teenage self below, or send me a message of some sage advice to pass along. :)

*I’m also keeping my door open to new opportunities for work and contracts in the Spring with flexibility, the arts and leadership in mind.*
